Summary

Lady Windermere's Fan is a four-act comedy by Oscar Wilde. The play was first published in 1893. Like many of Wilde's comedies, it bitingly satirizes the morals of society. The story concerns Lady Windermere, who suspects that her husband is having an affair with another woman. She confronts him with it but although he denies it, he invites the other woman, Mrs. Erlynne, to his wife's birthday ball... The best-known line of the play sums up the central theme: "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." (Uttered by Lord Darlington).

Dickens's Little Nell became one of his best-known heroines when The Old Curiosity Shop was first published in 1841. Virtuous and stoic, Nell takes care of her grandfather in his gloomy shop until his gambling debts force the pair of them to flee London. They are hunted by the grotesque and villainous moneylender Quilp and Nell's own worthless brother, Fred, who wrongly believes that their grandfather has a hidden fortune. Through a kaleidoscopic round of people and events, Nell and her grandfather eventually reach a safe refuge, although neither of them is destined to enjoy it for long

There can be few writers who have painted such a penetrating picture of Victorian life. From the outset of the novel, following Oliver's birth and his mother's death, observe how Dickens vehemently satirises the hypocrisy of his society regarding its callous attitude towards the urban poor - most notably in the character of the self-important beadle Mr Bumble. Notice, also, how innocent Oliver is but a toy in the hands of the villains, who include the sly and miserly Fagin and ruthless and sadistic Bill Sikes, two of the author's most intriguing characters.
