Sinopsis

In "The American Scene," Henry James embarks on a contemplative exploration of America during the early 20th century, capturing the nuances of American identity through the lens of a returning expatriate. This travel narrative, rich in lyrical prose and keen observation, offers a series of meditative reflections as James traverses the landscapes and social fabrics of the nation. Written in a period marked by significant cultural shifts, the book reveals James's ambivalence toward the modernizing America and showcases his analytical style, blending both personal impressions and broader sociocultural critiques that resonate with the literary movement of naturalism. Henry James, an eminent figure in literary realism, spent considerable years in Europe, which profoundly shaped his views on the juxtaposition of American and European cultures. His extensive travel and profound understanding of human psychology informed his writing, allowing him to navigate the complex dynamics of nationality, class, and culture. With a keen interest in the interplay between the individual and society, James's reflections in "The American Scene" provide an intimate glimpse into his evolving relationship with his homeland. This compelling work is a must-read for those interested in the literary and cultural history of America, as well as readers intrigued by the complexities of identity within a rapidly changing society. James's insightful observations invite readers to ponder their own connections to place and culture, making "The American Scene" an enduring classic that continues to resonate.

Motivated by his disgust with the US government, Henry David Thoreau’s seminal philosophical essay enjoins individuals to stand against the ruling forces that seek to erase their free will. It is the duty of a good citizen, he argues, not only to disobey a bad law, but also to protest an unjust government. His message of nonviolence and appeal to value one’s own conscience over political legislation have resonated throughout American and world history. Peppered with the author’s poetry and social commentary, Civil Disobedience has become a manifesto for civil dissidents, revolutionaries, and protestors everywhere. Indeed, originally so unpopular with readers that Thoreau was forced to buy back over half of the books from his publisher, this work has gone on to inspire the likes of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

Isaac Fitzgerald has lived many lives. He's been an altar boy, a bartender, a fat kid, a smuggler, a biker, a prince of New England. But before all that, he was a bomb that exploded his parents' lives—or so he was told. In Dirtbag, Massachusetts, Fitzgerald, with warmth and humor, recounts his ongoing search for forgiveness, a more far-reaching vision of masculinity, and a more expansive definition of family and self.

Fitzgerald's memoir-in-essays begins with a childhood that moves at breakneck speed from safety to violence, recounting an extraordinary pilgrimage through trauma to self-understanding and, ultimately, acceptance. From growing up in a Boston homeless shelter to bartending in San Francisco, from smuggling medical supplies into Burma to his lifelong struggle to make peace with his body, Fitzgerald strives to take control of his own story: one that aims to put aside anger, isolation, and entitlement to embrace the idea that one can be generous to oneself by being generous to others.

Gritty and clear-eyed, loud-hearted and beautiful, Dirtbag, Massachusetts is a rollicking book that might also be a lifeline.

"Fitzgerald nestles comfortably on a bar stool beside writers like Kerouac, Bukowski, Richard Price and Pete Hamill . . . The book’s charm is in its telling of male misbehavior and, occasionally, the things we men get right. The fights nearly all come with forgiveness. It is about the ways men struggle to make sense of themselves and the romance men too often find in the bottom of a bottle of whiskey . . . an endearing and tattered catalog of one man's transgressions and the ways in which it is our sins, far more than our virtues, that make us who we are." —New York Times Book Review

The social importance placed on food and wine in the Greek world was even more pronounced and had profound consequences for the rest of the world. As one modern historian aptly put it, “How classical Athens was fed is not a matter of marginal importance. Nothing less than the material base of a brilliant civilization is at issue.” Indeed, it was through the ability to create a food surplus that the ancient Greeks were able to establish their poleis and, from these, go on to develop the political and social structures that built the backbone of Western Civilization. Drinking for pleasure, as opposed to simply meeting the body´s requirement for hydration, was so crucial in Greece that a couple historians noted, “In a way, the study of the classics is the study of the consumption of alcohol.” While this assertion is an oversimplification, there is no doubt that alcohol played a crucial role in the evolution of Greek culture.
Indulgence is at the heart of modern perceptions of eating and drinking for the ancient Romans. The majority of primary sources depicting food and drink that have survived show rich patricians reclining at a table loaded with exotic foods, and Roman diners are often depicted as gorging themselves over numerous courses served over many hours. Of course, the history of eating and drinking for the wider population within the more than 1,000-year span of the empire was somewhat different. What the richest ate was markedly different from the fare on offer to their slaves, and between these two extremes, there were numerous socioeconomic groups whose eating and drinking habits varied enormously. Moreover, since the Roman Empire encompassed much of Europe and the Middle East, the different kinds of food and drinks available in Rome were vast.
