Summary

Victor Jones, of Philadelphia, has been in London now for 3 weeks. It should have only taken one week to secure the contract for his fledging business, but a different company won the bid. Victor has less than ten pounds in his pocket, he owes money to the hotel and he has no idea how he will pay for his return passage to the United States. Desperate and clueless he accidently meets his double in a crowded Hotel lounge. His lookalike, Mr. Rochester, gets him drunk and the next thing he knows is waking up in a posh bedroom and being called the Earl of Rochester. At first he thinks it is a practical joke and he plays along. But when the morning newspaper arrives, and he learns that the real Mr. Rochester has found dead under the name Victor Jones, things become interesting.

He thinks, as he escapes from Zanzibar, that he will probably never return, and yet the dream of studying in England matters above that.

Things do not happen quite as he imagined – the school where he teaches is cramped and violent, he forgets how it feels to belong. But there is Emma, beautiful, rebellious Emma, who turns away from her white, middle-class roots to offer him love and bear him a child. And in return he spins stories of his home and keeps her a secret from his family.

Twenty years later, when the barriers at last come down in Zanzibar, he is able and compelled to go back. What he discovers there, in a story potent with truth, will change the entire vision of his life.

It was even worse to discover just four weeks after her father’s death that her scheming stepmother is trying to arrange a marriage in the German spa resort of Baden-Baden between Daniela and her penniless lover for her own nefarious and greedy purposes, as Lord Seabrooke has left all his money and estates to Daniela and most definitely not to Esmé Blanc. Although guarded by day and night by her stepmother, in desperation Daniela manages to meet the Marquis of Crowle secretly in the garden of the Baden-Baden casino and begs him to help her escape as soon as possible from her perilous predicament.
