Apples, a common New England crop, have been called the United States' most endangered food. The iconic Texas Longhorn cattle is categorized at critical risk for extinction. Unique date palms, found nowhere else on the planet, grow in California’s Coachella Valley, but the family farms that caretake them are shutting down. Apples, cattle, dates?these are foods that carry significant cultural weight. But they’re disappearing. In Endangered Eating, culinary historian Sarah Lohman draws inspiration from the Ark of Taste, a list compiled by Slow Food International that catalogues important regional foods. She travels the country learning about the distinct ingredients at risk of being lost: in Hawaii, she learns the stories behind heirloom sugarcane; in the Navajo Nation, she assists in the traditional butchering of a Navajo Churro ram; in the Upper Midwest, she harvests wild rice; in the Pacific Northwest, she spends a day reefnet fishing; on the Gulf Coast, she devours gumbo made with filé powder; in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, she tastes America’s oldest peanut. She learns from those who love these rare ingredients: shepherds, fishers, farmers, scientists, historians, and activists. And she tries her hand at raising these crops and preparing these dishes. Animated by stories yet grounded in research, Endangered Eating gives listeners the tools to support community organizations and producers that work to preserve local culinary traditions and rare, cherished foods.

For many people, cockroaches are the most pesky of pests. In this funny and fascinating book, Frank reveals his love and admiration for so-called "nasty" creatures like cockroaches, crickets, and more. He shows us that even seemingly terrifying insects are beautiful in their own way—and essential to all life on Earth.

Frank never planned to study cockroaches. But when researching hummingbirds fell through, he switched to cockroach feces—and soon fell in love. Cockroaches are incredible survivors, devoted parents, and adapt to almost any environment. Nischk even answers the age-old question of whether a cockroach would survive a nuclear explosion. After hearing such eye-opening and warm-hearted stories, you'll think twice before stepping on one!

From cockroaches to crickets, Nischk travels to Ecuador to record cricket sounds, where he finds jungles bursting with a riot of insect life (including bullet ants whose stings are surprisingly painful). As Nischk tells his (mis)adventures as an entomologist, he shares stories about intriguing insect discoveries, from damselflies who lay eggs deep underwater, to zombie fungi that invade the brains of ants. Brimming with fascinating facts, incredible stories, and unbelievable anecdotes, Of Cockroaches and Crickets will intrigue anyone who has ever loved—or hated!—bugs.

    FRIENDS
THE ULTIMATE TRIVIA AND CURIOUS FACTS COLLECTION

    CREATED BY TRIVIA HUB

Friends is an American television sitcom created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, which aired on NBC from 1994 to 2004, lasting ten seasons. The show centers around six friends in their 20s and early 30s living in Manhattan, New York City: Rachel Green, Monica Geller, Phoebe Buffay, Joey Tribbiani, Chandler Bing, and Ross Geller. The series explores themes of friendship, love, relationships, and careers. The show's ensemble cast became highly popular, and the series finale was one of the most-watched in television history. Friends was also nominated for 62 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning the Outstanding Comedy Series award in 2002.

    CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

The TV show Friends was originally conceived under the working title Insomnia Cafe. The idea came to the creators as they reflected on the time after college when they first moved to New York.

The show's creators, David Crane and Marta Kauffman, initially pitched a seven-page treatment of Friends to NBC. NBC bought the idea as a put pilot, meaning they risked financial penalties if the pilot was not filmed.

Before settling on Friends, the series had working titles such as Six of One and Friends Like Us. NBC changed the title to Six of One because they felt Friends Like Us was too similar to another sitcom.

The show was lauded as the first true "ensemble" show, and series creator David Crane wanted all six actors to be equally prominent. The cast members made efforts to keep the ensemble format, opting for collective salary negotiations and appearing together on magazine covers.
