Sinopsis

It is with a kind of fear that I begin to write the history of my life. I have, as it were, a superstitious hesitation in lifting the veil that clings about my childhood like a golden mist. The task of writing an autobiography is a difficult one. When I try to classify my earliest impressions, I find that fact and fancy look alike across the years that link the past with the present. The woman paints the child’s experiences in her own fantasy. A few impressions stand out vividly from the first years of my life; but “the shadows of the prison-house are on the rest.” Besides, many of the joys and sorrows of childhood have lost their poignancy; and many incidents of vital importance in my early education have been forgotten in the excitement of great discoveries. In order, therefore, not to be tedious I shall try to present in a series of sketches only the episodes that seem to me to be the most interesting and important.

Laurel, an enterprising loan shark and investor, has a whole metropolis under his control. He manipulates everyone from judges to skinheads. Everything in his life is so calm and predictable, when suddenly his moneylenders are robbed in broad daylight by three men in masks of fairy beasts. The town is immediately surrounded by a red line. Crossing it is an immediate death sentence. Laurel himself leads the investigation of the collectors. He does not allow them to eat, but he allows them to drink alcohol. He divides the collectors according to their traits: Bold, Cynical, Coward, Good, Evil. The Bold is the first to go over the red line. He is buried in the pouring rain. Laurel then demands that the rest of them gather at the bar for a further showdown. At the bar, Laurel morally presses Coward. Mocking Good and philosophizing with Cynic. The pressuring of the collectionists does not end day or night. All this leads to a conflict between Kind and his wife, Nadine. Laurel arranges a public trial of Evil. Raising the slogan, "End Evil!" A mob that has been wound up tries to kill Evil right in the courtroom. Skinheads pile into the bar, where another night of questioning is taking place. They are served by a dark-skinned guy named Jesus. The gang leader decides to crucify Jesus. The good one volunteers to save the guy. He is helped by Cynic, Evil. Jesus is saved. But the death of the collectors is unavoidable. Laurel realizes this and intervenes. Shooting over a dozen skinheads. Beaten half to death, Evil decides to cross the red line. It seems to everyone that he is gaining his freedom. But then a shot is fired and Evil is killed. Three exhausted men drag the coffin with Evil, often dropping it. Once again the gathering in the drinking room and again the unbearable pressure from Laurel and his guards. At one point, Cynic claims that Laurel will never get his money. Cynic informs him that he denies not only the money, but life itself. Laurel kills Cynic by stabbing him through the heart. Laurel now puts the coward on trial and publicly burns him at the stake under the gaze of a cheering crowd. Kind, half-conscious, is taken to the bar, where he is revived by an old Negro. Having come to his senses he realizes that all the preceding is some kind of illusion, but in fact he is Sergei, and he is engaged in bilking money out of debtors at Laurel's. It is he who conceives with the help of his friends to rob Laurel. This is where the true, highly dynamic story of Laurel's robbery begins...

This one woman's mission to the Solomon Islanders, or Kanakas, working on her family's Australian plantation soon expanded to their home islands. "A singular, bewitching work about cycles of life and loss, the patterns of behavior that seem to lock us into who we are, and the quest for a faith that might break us free." —Hua Hsu, author of Stay TrueNamed a Most Anticipated Book of 2025 by Vulture and LitHubA genre-bending story about breaking―both of the heart and form itself―from the author of Biography of X.Note to the listener: This book was written in two parts, either of which can be listened to first, neither of which is the true start of the story. You have the option to skip ahead to the fiction half or start at the beginning with the nonfiction.Adrift in the winter of 2021 after a sudden breakup and the ensuing depression, the novelist Catherine Lacey began cataloguing the wreckage of her life and the beauty of her friendships, a practice that eventually propagated fiction both entirely imagined and strangely true. Betrayed by the mercurial partner she had trusted with a shared mortgage and suddenly catapulted into the unknown, Lacey’s appetite vanished completely, a visceral reminder of the teenage emaciation that came when she stopped believing in God. Through relationships, travel, reading, and memories of her religious fanaticism, Lacey charts the contours of faith’s absence and reemergence. Bending form, she and her characters recall gnostic experiences with animals, close encounters with male anger, griefdriven lust, and the redemptive power of platonic love and narrative itself.A hybrid work across fiction and nonfiction with no beginning or ending, The Möbius Book troubles the line between memory and fiction with an openhearted defense of faith’s inherent danger.A Macmillan Audio production from Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

The incomparable George Hamilton returns with a superb offering of travails and anecdotes spanning his five decades on our airwaves and on our screens, always at the heart of Irish culture.
Picking up where his first offering, The Nation Holds Its Breath, left off, George continues to illuminate the path that took him from the Cregagh Road in Belfast to the most extraordinary locations across the world. Whether going behind the scenes of his beloved Lyric FM show or reliving the dramatic events of the 100-metre final at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the reader will be captivated once more by George’s storytelling as he expertly weaves tales and paints the most evocative pictures.

Sport, music and travel are intertwined throughout – George’s love for all three evident on every page. His writing style is consistently surprising; the reader is never quite certain where George is taking them but few will be able to resist being caught up in the stories and going along for the ride.

The Hamilton Notes is a delightful manifestation of that old adage – ‘It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.’ And there could be no finer raconteur to guide the reader along the way.
