Summary

In "Mycenæ," Heinrich Schliemann provides a compelling account of his archaeological explorations in ancient Greece, focusing on the ruins of Mycenae, a site of paramount significance in the study of Aegean civilization. Written with a blend of personal narrative and empirical observation, the book embodies the spirit of 19th-century archaeology, capturing the tension between romantic idealism and scientific inquiry. Schliemann's vivid descriptions and meticulous attention to detail transport readers to a world steeped in myth and history, while also highlighting the methodological challenges faced by early archaeologists in interpreting fragmented ruins. Heinrich Schliemann, a self-taught archaeologist and passionate advocate of Homeric epics, was driven by a profound belief that the tales of ancient Greece were grounded in reality. His life experiences, from humble beginnings in Germany to fortune as a successful businessman, fueled his obsession with proving the historical authenticity of the Trojan War and other classical narratives. "Mycenæ" is a culmination of his relentless pursuits, showcasing not only his discoveries but also his convictions and methodologies as they evolved with each excavation. This book is essential for anyone with a keen interest in archaeology, classical studies, or the intersection of myth and history. Schliemann's work offers a unique insight into the foundational moments of modern archaeology, urging readers to reflect on the narratives of the past and the stories that come to life through the ruins of ancient civilizations.

The An Lushan Rebellion, one of the most significant uprisings in Chinese history, did not emerge overnight. The roots of the rebellion can be traced back to the political, social, and military tensions that plagued the Tang Dynasty in the mid-8th century. The Tang Empire, once at its peak, was experiencing a slow but steady decline, marked by corruption, factionalism, and a weakening central authority. These conditions set the stage for the rise of regional military leaders like An Lushan.
An Lushan was a general of mixed Sogdian and Turkish descent, originally serving in the Tang military. His talents as a military strategist, combined with his ability to garner the loyalty of his troops, made him a powerful figure. He rose through the ranks of the imperial court, earning favor from Emperor Xuanzong. Initially, An Lushan was appointed to oversee the northern frontier, where he successfully defended the empire from external threats. However, his growing influence, both militarily and politically, began to stir unease at the imperial court.
The Tang Dynasty’s reliance on powerful military governors, known as jiedushi, to maintain order in the frontier regions allowed these individuals to amass significant power. This decentralization of authority undermined the emperor's control over the empire and contributed to widespread corruption. The power struggles within the court and the lavish spending of Emperor Xuanzong’s court, especially during his later years, further distanced the ruling elite from the needs of the common people.

Could it be possible? This old saint in the forest hath not yet heard of it, that God is dead!

The ancient Persian prophet Zarathustra descends from a life of solitude on the mountain to announce to the world that God has been supplanted by the "Superman", the divine in human form. In one of the most radical and influential works of modern philosophy, Friedrich Nietzsche lays out the new standards of morality after the "death of God".

Frequently misrepresented (and hijacked to dangerous purpose by Nazi intellectuals), Thus Spake Zarathustra is a work of profound brilliance and poetic mastery which still provides meaning in today's complex and changing world.

At the core of this debut collection is a question – what is worth holding onto?
Through poetic experiments that blend the academic and the artistic, Rhiya Pau queries complex characters and tender landscapes. Routes journeys from Ba's kitchen in Sonia Gardens to Independence hour in Delhi, across the pink shores of Nakuru, to meet a painter on Lee High Road.
Celebrating fifty years since her community arrived in the UK, Pau chronicles the migratory histories of her ancestors and simultaneously lays bare the conflicts of identity that arise from being a member of the East African-Indian diaspora. In this multilingual discourse exhibiting vast formal range, Pau wrestles with language, narrative and memory, daring to navigate their collective fallibilities to architect her own identity.
'[Routes]...holds up to the light the wisdom of the past, and asks what else is passed down along with it...a work of humane intelligence, formal experiment and linguistic verve' - Sarah Howe, Judge of Eric Gregory Awards 2022
