Sinopse

This historical story is set in 1573, during William of Orange's rebellion against Spanish rule of the Netherlands, and includes some historical figures. The hero, a young Englishman, has served briefly under Alva before departing to join the fortunes of William the Silent. The plot revolves around his seeking an audience with Alva, making a deal to deliver up the town of Breuth in exchange for a certain sum of money, and bringing back with him the daughter of the town's governor, who had just been captured by the Spaniards and was in Alva's camp. The burden of the story is how he deceives the Spaniards, slaughters them, uses the money to feed his starving soldiers, joins William, and finally marries the Governor's daughter.

Hollywood is indelibly printed in our minds as the ‘go-to’ place for entertainment and has been for decades. When there really did seem to be more stars in Hollywood than in Heaven Hollywood Stage had them performing films as radio plays – on the sponsors dime of course. Classic films now become audiobooks with many featuring the original stars from way back when. Here's Little Women starring June Allyson & Peter Lawford.

Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943), the unconventional and controversial painter of Belorussian origin, combines influences of classic European painting with Post-Impressionism and Expressionism. As a member of the Artists from Belarus, a group within the Parisian School, he created an oeuvre mainly consisting of landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. His individual style, characterised by displays of humour and despair and by use of luminous colours, makes him a modern master who is still little understood.

Salvador Dalí sublimated his madness without ever falling into it. Antonin Artaud, confronted with the traumas of childhood, oscillated all his life between an overflowing creation and accesses of madness. Niki de Saint Phalle, thanks to artistic expression, cured herself of a deep depression linked to the trauma of incest. Vincent van Gogh, in order to reach the summit of his art, put himself in danger to the point of committing suicide. Camille Claudel exhausted herself in her creation and ended up being interned and never creating again.
Based on the life and work of a dozen artists of genius, Thierry Delcourt tries to understand these artists’ transition from the summits of creation and the artistic abyss. Why do some people fall into madness while others go through life without a hitch? Why do some sick people find healing through creation? Why do many artists have an obsessive need to create relentlessly?
To these fascinating questions, this book offers striking answers about creation on the brink of the abyss.
