Sinopsis

A sequel to the “British comedy classic . . . revealing a great deal of still-pertinent information about house-building” (The Globe and Mail).   A sequel to The Honeywood File, originally published in 1929, The Honeywood Settlement takes the form of an epistolary novel. Some of the great comic characters inhabit the pages of this book, and like all comedy, their stories contain more than a grain of truth. The book tells, in the form of letters gleaned from an architect's files, the excitements and disasters of designing and building a large country house, with the painful aftermath of clearing up the defects and haggling over the bill. What makes this book so enjoyable and instructive is the clever interplay of all the diverse characters in the drama, and the author's sagacious and witty running commentary on their performance. The main protagonists are the hapless young architect James Spinlove; Sir Leslie Brash, his peppery and pompous client; the honest John Grigblay, the builder whose down-to-earth common sense gets the job done despite difficulties. Plus a cast of glorious inventions as Hoochcraft, Potch, Nibnose & Rasper, and Beddy & Tinge, quantity surveyors.   Praise for TheHoneywood File:   “Full of human nature; and full of useful information lightly conveyed, for everybody concerned with domestic architecture.” —Arnold Bennett, author of Anna of the Five Towns and How To Live on 24 Hours a Day   “Recommended to the earnest study of all young architects and all those temerarious enough to desire to build their own houses.” —The BurlingtonMagazine   “I have admired The Honeywood File and The Honeywood Settlement . . . since I was told about them as an architecture student, and never ceased to feel grateful to the lecturer who introduced them to me.” —Leslie Fairweather, architect and former editor of Architects’ Journal

Planet Hy Man is in turmoil. Her leader lost on earth. Will Mex rise to the challenge or fade faster than her hair dye?
Mex is heading for the Edinburgh Festival in search of lost energy. Hot on her heels is Beryl, her leader who has already dropped Mex in it once and may do again. Beryl has a planet to save and an arch rival to beat. A feat made near impossible considering her arch-rival has taken over Beryl’s “operations room” along with every high- tech spying equipment going.
As time runs out Beryl turns to Mex. Mex having discovered gin hooks up with a troupe of performing transvestites, tosses her mobile to the wind, and delves into the seedier side of the festival. Saving Planet Hy Man could not be further from her mind if she was comatose.
Will Beryl convince Mex to sober up and save their planet or will Mex stick with the padded bras and all who wear them?

Two misfits explore the possibilities of post-Communist Russia in this “formally audacious novel [that] bubbles with energy and mischief” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Acclaimed Cuban author José Manuel Prieto draws on his expertise in Russian culture to craft a kaleidoscopic portrait of its post-Communist moment. Through alphabetical entries from Abacas to Zizi, Prieto unfolds the story of two misfits on a wild adventure, caught between old world traditions and contemporary Western influences. Thelonius Monk (not his real name) and Linda Evangelista (not her real name) meet in Saint Petersburg after the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991. They journey to Yalta, where Thelonius promises to make Linda famous in the fashion magazines. But in fact, he’s drafting a novel about her. Along the way, they indulge in extravagant dinners, luxury automobiles, and seaside hotels as they discuss the nature of love, art, celebrity, and the unknown future before them. At the crossroads of literature, philosophy, history, and pop culture, Prieto delivers sparkling meditations on everything from Bach and Dostoyevsky to Italian alligator shoes and fluoride toothpaste. The result is a singular novel that captures a nation straddling custom and innovation.
