Sinopsis

In 'Familiar Faces,' Harry Graham takes readers on an inventive poetic journey, introducing them to an eclectic array of characters bound by the thread of everyday life. With playful verse flowing from the bustle of societal occupations to the quiet corners of personal reflection, Graham's collection boasts both rhythmic vivacity and gentle wit. Each poem resonates with the pulse of humanity while cloaked in the sophistication of classical literary form, inviting comparisons to the satirical works of Ogden Nash and the societal observation of Hilaire Belloc. Graham crafts his stanzas with an eye for the ironies of the human condition, using his pen to sketch vignettes of the professional and the personal, echoing in the modern ear with both cleverness and charm.

Harry Graham, whose literary trajectory weaves through the tradition of light verse, offers in 'Familiar Faces' an embodiment of his talent for sharp observation and satirical commentary. A deft hand in carving whimsy out of mundane occurrences, Graham's background and experiences give rise to his unique poetic voice, one that draws upon the quotidian to illuminate truths and absurdities inherent in our interactions. His alchemy of wordplay underscores both the humorous and profound elements found within the scope of the everyday, revealing an author deeply attuned to the nuances of social engagement.

'Familiar Faces' is an essential read for those who delight in the melding of humor with literary artistry. Recommended for a wide audience, from the poetry enthusiast to the casual reader seeking solace in a reflective chuckle, Graham's work serves as a testament to the enduring power of poetry to capture the human experience. This compendium of musings, with its universal appeal and accessible language, proves that poetry can, indeed, be as entertaining as it is enlightening.

“… my relationship with most art living or lost / is the same as yours: we will pass it by” bemoans the last poem in Jacob McArthur Mooney’s latest collection. Written as a sequence of “ghost ekphrastics” (poems inspired by works of art that neither the poet nor most living people have ever seen), Frank’s Wing constructs a whole world of lost or destroyed artifacts that have been rearticulated and resurrected, brought back to life by a fictional property baron as a dying gift to Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario.

From “decadent” modern paintings torched by Nazis, to lost films, to never-performed performance art, the abiding premise of the book is that art invites mourning: not because it is mournful, but because it is vast. It taunts the plans of mortals while “a week / of kids’ videos and lip syncs / siphon through the internet each second.” Bordering ideas about FOMO and mortality are considerations of destruction itself, as the book recalls loss events predicted by both the considered works’ historical contexts and the frailties of their makers. Concerned with consuming art as much as with making it, Frank’s Wing examines the positions made available to the art-consumer: owner, overhearer, interrogator, and potentially, both destroyer and the thing that art destroys.
