Sinopse

Education Revolutions explores the profound historical shifts in education and their impact on society and the economy. It examines how changes in educational paradigms have acted as catalysts for global development, focusing on the democratization of education, the rise of scientific and technical training, and the impact of digital technologies.

Did you know that the move toward broader access to education has been instrumental in fostering social mobility? Or that scientific and technical training has been a crucial driver of industrial and technological advancements?

The book argues that education is a fundamental force shaping societies, not just a tool for individual advancement. It begins by establishing a historical context, tracing the evolution of education from ancient civilizations to the modern era, and then analyzes the development of specialized education before addressing the impact of digital technologies.

By integrating historical analysis with contemporary challenges, Education Revolutions offers a fresh perspective on the enduring relevance of education in a rapidly changing world, making it valuable for students, educators, and policymakers alike.

If trench warfare was an inevitability during the war, it is only because the events leading up to the First Battle of the Marne were quite different. The armies at the beginning of the war moved quickly through the land, but the First Battle of the Marne devolved into a bloody pitched battle that led to the construction of trenches after the Germans retreated, blocked in their pursuit of Paris. When the aftermath disintegrated into a war between trenches, some Germans thought they had the upper hand since they were occupying French territory, but with fewer soldiers than the combined Allied nations and fewer resources and supplies, it was possibly only a matter of time before they were ultimately defeated. The commander of the German armies, General Helmuth von Moltke, allegedly said to Kaiser Wilhelm II immediately after the First Battle of the Marne, "Your Majesty, we have lost the war."
One of the most famous people in the world came to tour the city of Paris for the first time on June 28, 1940. Over the next three hours, he rode through the city’s streets, stopping to tour L’Opéra Paris. He rode down the Champs-Élysées toward the Trocadero and the Eiffel Tower, where he had his picture taken. After passing through the Arc de Triomphe, he toured the Pantheon and old medieval churches, though he did not manage to see the Louvre or the Palace of Justice. Heading back to the airport, he told his staff, “It was the dream of my life to be permitted to see Paris. I cannot say how happy I am to have that dream fulfilled today.” Four years after his tour, Adolf Hitler would order the city’s garrison commander, General Dietrich von Choltitz, to destroy Paris, warning his subordinate that the city "must not fall into the enemy's hand except lying in complete debris."

What do you do when you lose more than you can afford, when the stable bridge you’ve been crossing suddenly gives way and you find yourself plummeting into a chasm of fear and self-doubt?
After losing a dear friend and fellow firefighter to suicide, Steve is left shaken and leaves the fire service forever – or so he thinks. While trying to decide what his future holds, Steve takes us through his past. From Firefighter to Assistant Chief, a winning lottery ticket to a twist of fate, a series of strange health problems and devastating injury, Steve pulls us along the dizzying journey with him. And just when we think it can’t possibly get any worse for him, he leads us to the edge. And then the healing begins.
Although a sequel to his first book, The Unbroken, Extinguished is a story of its own, stranger than fiction, and another incredible example of Steve’s willingness to lay everything on the line to help anyone suffering from mental illness. At the same time, this isn’t a book just for them, or just for first responders. It is powerfully human and will resonate with everyone who reads it.

While doing fieldwork on the remote Indonesian island of Flores, anthropologist Gregory Forth came across people talking about half-apelike, half-humanlike creatures that once lived in a cave on the slopes of a nearby volcano. Over the years he continued to record what locals had to say about these mystery hominoids while searching for ways to explain them as imaginary symbols of the wild or other cultural representations.

In Between Ape and Human, we follow Forth on the trail of this mystery hominoid, and the space they occupy in islanders' culture as both natural creatures and as supernatural beings. In a narrative filled with adventure, Lio culture and language, zoology and natural history, Forth comes to a startling and controversial conclusion.

Unique, important, and thought-provoking, this book will appeal to anyone interested in human evolution, the survival of species (including our own), and how humans might relate to 'not-quite-human' animals. A must-listen for all those interested in cryptozoology, it is the only firsthand investigation by a leading anthropologist into the possible survival of a primitive species of human into recent times—and its coexistence with modern humans.

Psychopathy is a complex personality disorder characterized by a unique set of emotional, interpersonal, and behavioral traits. Individuals with psychopathy often exhibit a profound lack of empathy, manipulativeness, and an inability to form deep emotional connections. They are skilled at deception and can appear charming and charismatic, which allows them to navigate social situations with ease while hiding their true nature.
One of the most defining traits of psychopathy is emotional detachment. Psychopaths do not experience emotions in the same way that most people do. While they may understand emotions on an intellectual level, they lack the ability to genuinely feel them, particularly emotions such as guilt, remorse, or love. This emotional deficit makes them highly adept at exploiting others without any sense of moral conflict. They can feign emotions convincingly, using charm and flattery to manipulate those around them for personal gain.
Manipulativeness is another hallmark of psychopathy. Psychopaths use deception and persuasion to control others, often without their victims realizing it. They are highly strategic and will adjust their behavior based on what benefits them the most in a given situation. Because they lack empathy, they do not hesitate to lie, cheat, or deceive if it serves their interests.

Katharine Jenkins offers an introduction to feminist philosophy, giving the listener an idea of what it is, why it is important, and how to think about it. She explores key topics such as gender oppression, beauty, objectification, and sexuality. Moreover, she considers questions about the relation between the personal and the political, what it is to be a woman, whether there is a distinctive kind of women's knowledge, and what feminist philosophy can bring to our understanding of such aspects of our world as justice, work, and the environment. Feminist Philosophy takes a richly intersectional approach, recognizing the combined impact of such factors as race and class as well as gender.

Step into the South's brush arbors and piney woods where faith runs deep, stories run wild, and the old-time camp meeting was anything but quiet.

Praying in Pine Straw immerses listeners in the raw, rollicking, and deeply human world of Alabama's camp meetings—a Southern tradition where fire-and-brimstone preaching echoed through pine forests and where faith was often accompanied by contradiction. From "treeing the Devil" to "holy laughter," these revivals blended heartfelt worship with all the complications of human nature. Mule-drawn wagons brought the faithful to rustic camps, where gospel fervor mingled with whiskey traders, local politicians, and opportunists of every kind. Preachers thundered against sin—even as they sometimes flirted with it themselves.

Robert C. Morgan offers a textured portrait of camp meetings as both spiritual experience and cultural spectacle, reviving a Southern tradition that flourished from the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. With a blend of humor and keen insight, Praying in the Pine Straw unveils the enduring contradictions of "old-time religion" and its significant influence on Southern culture and faith—a legacy that is both treasured and complex.
