Sinopsis

In "When A Man's A Man," Harold Bell Wright intricately weaves a narrative that explores the complexities of masculinity against the backdrop of early 20th-century America. The novel employs a rich, lyrical style that captures the essence of the human experience while addressing moral dilemmas and societal expectations. Through its vivid characterizations and compelling plot, Wright invites readers to reflect on the virtues of integrity, strength, and honor as central themes in the life of a man facing personal and external adversities. Harold Bell Wright, a pioneer of American literature and an early proponent of the genre that would later be termed 'inspirational fiction,' often infused his own life experiences into his works. Raised in a religious household and exposed to both the beauty of nature and the struggles of humanity, Wright's narrative voice balances a deep sympathy for his characters with a critical view of their moral choices. His background as a preacher undoubtedly influenced his focus on ethical living and the quest for personal redemption, elements that resonate profoundly in this novel. This compelling tale is highly recommended for readers interested in moral philosophy and character development within literature. "When A Man's A Man" is not only a story of personal growth but also a commentary on the societal constructs of masculinity that persist today. In reading Wright's work, one will not only enjoy a classic piece of American literature but also engage in a substantive discussion about the human condition.

The Old Fellow's Letter: Ruggles and I were down on the Old Fellow. It doesn't matter why and, since in a story of this kind we must tell the truth no matter what happens or else where is the use of writing a story at all? I'll have to confess that we had deserved all we got and that the Old Fellow did no more than his duty by us.

Mary Gladys Meredith was born on 25th March 1881 at Leighton Lodge in the village of Leighton, near Shrewsbury in Shropshire.
Mary was home-schooled by her father before being sent to a finishing school in Southport in 1895. Her longs walks in the countryside helped her develop a heightened sense of observation and description, of both people and places, which later infused both her poetry and prose.
When she was 20 she developed symptoms of Graves' disease, a thyroid disorder that caused bulging protuberant eyes and throat goitre. This caused life-long ill health and was a possible contributor to her early death.
Mary was first published as a teenager when her brother sent to a local newspaper her poem on a recent rail accident. Mary, who was in the habit of destroying her work was appalled though placated when she discovered that it had received some positive appreciation in readers letters.
1912 brought marriage to Henry Bertram Law Webb, a teacher. He supported her literary work which, in 1917, resulted in the publication of her novel ‘The Golden Arrow.’
A few years later they acquired a property in London where, it was hoped, recognition of her literary talents would be more easily recognised.
Her 1924 novel, ‘Precious Bane’, won the Prix Femina Vie Heureuse, the prestigious French literary prize awarded by an all-female jury.
Most of her poetry and various other works were only published after her death.
By 1927 her health was deteriorating and her marriage failing.
Mary Webb died on 8th October 1927 at St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex. She was 46.
