Summary

The new millennium offers perfect timing for publication of a large volume on the history of eroticism. Today, we paradoxically face both new freedoms and increasingly stereotyped language. Political correctness is the new norm and images now stand raised to the status of icons, especially images of women. In earlier millennia, women were goddesses or Holy Virgins, but today they are fashion models. This demotes Apollo into a male model or movie star. What happened to the insolence of the 18th-century libertines or the carefree excesses of the Belle Epoque and legalised brothels? Except for a handful of dusty outdated images, that era is now long gone. This book disregards conventional thinking to present 800 reproductions that illustrate erotic art from Ancient Greece down to the present era in both Europe and Asia. With no inhibition or hesitation, erotic art asserts itself as a key factor of societal development where the quest for pleasure is the sinless attitude of men and women who have determined that reproduction need be no end in itself. Previous books by Hans-Jürgen Döpp include The Erotic Museum in Berlin, The Temple of Venus and Paris Eros.

While it might not appear to be the case, musician Ben Folds concedes he wasn’t entirely comfortable playing the piano in front of an orchestra at first. That’s because growing up in North Carolina, playing percussion in orchestras, he never dreamed he’d be the headliner.
But several successful albums later, including this year’s Ben Folds Presents: University A Cappella, his latest tour includes a series of performances with some of the nation’s leading orchestras.
Folds spoke with Jeffrey Brown at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., at the start of the tour.

The spiritual journey of the Beatles is the story of an entire generation of visionaries in the sixties who transformed the world. The Inner Light illumines hidden meanings of the Beatles' India-influenced lyrics and sounds, decoded by Susan Shumsky—a rare insider who spent two decades in the ashrams and six years on the personal staff of the Beatles' mentor, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. This eye-opening book draws back the curtain on the Beatles' experiments with psychedelics, meditation, chanting, and Indian music. Among many shocking revelations, we discover who invented "raga rock" (not the Beatles), the real identity of rare Indian instruments and musicians on their tracks, which Beatle was the best meditator (not George), why the Beatles left India in a huff, John and George's attempts to return, Maharishi's accurate prediction, and who Sexy Sadie, Jojo, Bungalow Bill, Dear Prudence, Blackbird, My Sweet Lord, Hare Krishna, and the Fool on the Hill really were.Half a century later, the Beatles have sold more records than any other recording artist. A new generation wants to relive the magic of the flower-power era and is now discovering the message of this iconic band and its four superstars. For people of all nations and ages, the Beatles' mystique lives on. The Inner Light is Susan Shumsky's gift to their legacy.
