Sinopsis

“Thought-provoking…any scientist interested in genetics will find this an enlightening look at the history of this field.”—Quarterly Review of Biology   It was only around 1800 that heredity began to enter debates among physicians, breeders, and naturalists. Soon thereafter, it evolved into one of the most fundamental concepts of biology.   Here, Staffan Muller-Wille and Hans-Jorg Rheinberger offer a succinct cultural history of the scientific concept of heredity. They outline the dramatic changes the idea has undergone since the early modern period and describe the political and technological developments that brought about these changes. They begin with an account of premodern theories of generation, showing that these were concerned with the procreation of individuals rather than with hereditary transmission, and reveal that when hereditarian thinking first emerged, it did so in a variety of cultural domains, such as politics and law, medicine, natural history, breeding, and anthropology.   The authors then track theories of heredity from the late nineteenth century—when leading biologists considered it in light of growing societal concerns with race and eugenics—through the rise of classical and molecular genetics in the twentieth century, to today, as researchers apply sophisticated information technologies to understand heredity. What we come to see from this exquisite history is why it took such a long time for heredity to become a prominent concept in the life sciences, and why it gained such overwhelming importance in those sciences and the broader culture over the last two centuries.

A clarion call for freedom from one of the twentieth century’s most important philosophers and writers, Kahlil Gibran A book so powerful it was burned in the marketplace of Beirut at the time of its publication, Kahlil Gibran’s Spirits Rebellious is a clarion call for freedom in his homeland of Lebanon—for individuals and society. Gibran’s bitter denunciation of religious and political injustice flows through his lyric pen in three parables, that of “Madame Rose Hanie,” “The Cry of the Graves,” and “Kahlil the Heretic.” His vision of liberty is no less powerful today.

The demand for highly qualified professionals with practical vocational education and training is increasing worldwide. However, many countries do not have a vocational education and training system comparable to the scheme in Switzerland. Vocational education and training is usually provided in schools, which seldom work together with local industry. Otherwise, it is implemented in individual companies and aligned to the specific needs of those organisations only. Generic, academic and soft skills are rarely provided.
This book describes the Swiss Vocational Education and Training Initiative India, its background, concept and results. The initiative is a response to the requirements of Swiss companies in India, which can only fully exploit their growth potential when they can employ better qualified personnel. A fascinating role concept for implementing the dual vocational education and training system in India was designed, implemented and evaluated together with the participating organisations, regional vocational education and training schools, coordinating organisations and the authorities. The results are very promising for expansion to other regions and occupations. The book also highlights the obstacles that must be overcome in such a project.

“A gripping narrative” of the German submarines that nearly changed the outcome of World War II from the author of Dönitz and the Wolf Packs (Naval Review).

In essence, this is the story of U-223, commanded by Karl-Jurgen Wächter from the time of her commissioning in Kiel in January 1943 through a murderous career to her eventual but dramatic demise in the Mediterranean in March 1944. At the same time, the book covers the declining fortunes of the U-boat arm as a whole from early 1943 when it seemed invincible and seriously threatened the Allies with defeat to the end of the war.

This fascinating work centers around the encounter between a visitor from the nineteenth century, William Guest, and a decentralized and humane socialist future without class segregation and with direct democracy without government al empowerment... Inspired by the work of John Ruskin and Karl Marx; this novel is not only a statement of egalitarian convictions but a great early contribution to the utopian genre! This work could be seen as a kind of utopian counterpart to George Orwell's famous and deeply pessimistic, dystopian novel 1984.
