Sinopsis

This issue, we have 7 original stories (which I believe is our most ever), starting with a science fiction/mystery mashup from H.K. Slade (thanks to Acquiring Editor Michael Bracken), as well as Viviana De Cecco, Kate Bergquist, Maureen Bowden, Ed Teja, and John Gregory Betancourt (me!). Our solve-it-yourself mystery is an original, too.

For our reprints, Acquiring Editor Barb Goffman has a great modern mystery from William Ade, and a pair of mystery classics by Jeffery Farnol and Sinclair Gluck round things out. Good stuff.

"In this madly original debut, Ms. Harrison speaks up in a fresh, animated voice to say something worth saying about the festering animosities of small minds cooped up in small towns." —The New York Times Book Review

Blue Deer, Montana, may seem like a tranquil town nestled at the foot of the Crazy Mountains, but an influx of writers, artists, and actors has driven its inhabitants a little nuts. When someone uses a rifle on George Blackwater as he's working on his new screenplay, Sheriff Jules Clement figures the culprit is George's angry wife, Mona, who has been on the rampage since George's latest batch of affairs. But soon the number of killings multiplies, and Jules is surrounded by a variety of suspects, including George himself, still unhinged by something that happened twenty years ago. As Jules reluctantly digs into the seamy side of his hometown, he finds himself swamped by bad dreams, bad press, and an increasing distaste for his job.

One of the top twenty-five westerns of all time: an action-packed tale about a range war in a violent town—and the honest foreman who risks his life to keep the peace.

Phil Evarts is dead, and the Hatchet Range is up for grabs. That's 70,000 acres of prime turf just waiting for the man rich enough to buy it . . . or the gunman crazy enough to kill for it. Every schemer in town has his eyes on Hatchet, and Bide Mariner leads the charge. An unscrupulous rancher who'll stop at nothing for cash, Mariner has the money and the guns to take whatever he wants. Only Will Ballard stands in his way—and that means Ballard is marked for death.

The foreman at Hatchet Range, Ballard is an honest man who'll do anything to keep the ranch from falling into Mariner's hands. In a town so rotten with greed that even the sheriff is against him, Ballard must stand alone to save this little piece of the American West.

Voted one of the top twenty-five westerns of all time by the Western Writers of America and made into a 1952 Republic film starring Rod Cameron, Ride the Man Down showcases award-winning author Luke Short at the height of his writing powers.

Sample a moment of magic realism from the Red Book of Hergest:On one side of the river he saw a flock of white sheep, and on the other a flock of black sheep. And whenever one of the white sheep bleated, one of the black sheep would cross over, and become white; and when one of the black sheep bleated, one of the white sheep would cross over, and become black. Before passing on to the Mabinogion proper, Lady Charlotte Guest devotes Volume I of her compilation of medieval Welsh tales to three brief romances of Arthur’s Court. The centrepiece is the story of Peredur, the Dumb Youth – known elsewhere as Perceval, Parzifal, the Holy Fool, et al.This is the violent world of satin-clad knights and their clashing encounters, peremptory slayings of giants and cave-dwelling monsters – a world where love is as sudden and final as death. (Introduction by Martin Geeson)
