This novel by the prolific Californian author Gertrude Horn Atherton is based on the real life story of Nikolai Rezanov, a man who, in 1806, pushed for the Russian colonization of Alaska and California. "Not twenty pages have you turned before you know this Rezanov, privy councilor, grand chamberlain, plenipotentiary of the Russo-American company, imperial inspector of the extreme eastern and northwestern dominions of his imperial majesty Alexander the First, emperor of Russia—all this and more, a man." Twenty-one years later, Atherton penned the biography "Rezánov and Doña Concha" on the centennial of a famed romance between the statesman and a Spanish girl, who became a nun after his death. - Summary by Lynne Thompson

In a remote French village, tranquility is shattered when a brutal crime exposes hidden tensions and dangerous secrets among the locals. As the local chief of police investigates, what seems like a simple case soon reveals a complex web of personal vendettas, buried histories, and simmering resentments. With atmospheric detail and a keen eye for human behavior, the story explores how even the most peaceful communities can harbor darkness beneath the surface. Suspenseful and reflective, it’s a gripping portrait of loyalty, justice, and the fragile balance between past and present.

I was happy being single. No relationship drama. No woman putting demands on my time. I had my family and my club. I didn't need anyone else.

But when a mysterious brunette walked into our clubhouse, something inside me shifted.

She wasn't like anyone I'd ever met. Everything I prided myself on, being unattached, emotionally unavailable, in it for nothing but sex . . . it all shattered.

But with the cartel still threatening the Knights Corruption, I kept her at a distance, treating our relationship as nothing more than casual. When my plan backfired, she walked away. And I let her go without a fight. Distance meant safety. Or so I thought.

When another attempt was orchestrated against our club, I was forced to make a different choice. There was only one issue, though. I had to convince her to give me another chance.

Would my decision prove to be the right one? Or would it all come crumbling down around us?

    Contains mature themes.

He had refused to tell his father the truth of the crime because of his love for his cousin.

'Stuart MacBride is an automatic must-read for me . . . always fast, hard, authentic – and different' – Lee Child, author of the Jack Reacher seriesPerfect for fans of Ian Rankin and Val McDermid, Blood, Rust and Steel is darkly funny and gripping Scottish crime at its very best. All good things must come to an end . . .Acting Detective Inspector Roberta Steel has never been shy, but she’s finally retiring. After thirty years of policing Aberdeen’s underbelly, she’s all set for her twilight years to feature gardening gloves, afternoon tea, crosswords puzzles, and shouting at the telly. So, when a body turns up in a wheelie bin, it looks like an excellent way to round off her career and go out with a bang. But the Northeast of Scotland isn’t finished with her yet:There’s a violent protest to stop; far-right populist politicians, and sketchy government spooks; a by-election; drugs, dogs, and baby-doll nighties; and a desperate ex-colleague, begging her for help. With only her Queen Street Irregulars for backup, and the top brass desperate to get shot of her, these final few weeks might just be the death of her . . .* * *Praise for Stuart MacBride:'MacBride is a damned fine writer' – Peter James, UK Number One Bestselling Author'Dark and brilliantly written' – Linwood Barclay, author of I Will Ruin You'MacBride is a masterful storyteller with a terrific eye for detail and razor-sharp wit' – Karin Slaughter, author of This Is Why We Lied'Crime fiction of the highest order' – Mark Billingham, author of The Last Dance
