Sinopse

In 1851 Leo Tolstoy enlisted in the Russian army and was sent to the Caucasus to help defeat the Chechens. During this war a great Avar chieftain, Hadji Murád, broke with the Chechen leader Shamil and fled to the Russians for safety. Months later, while attempting to rescue his family from Shamil's prison, Hadji Murád was pursued by those he had betrayed and, after fighting the most heroic battle of his life, was killed.

Tolstoy, witness to many of the events leading to Hadji Murád's death, set down this story with painstaking accuracy to preserve for future generations the horror, nobility, and destruction inherent in war.

Set during World War I, The Return of the Soldier tells the story of Chris Baldry, a British soldier who returns home after being wounded in battle. However, his injury is not physical—instead, it causes him to suffer from amnesia, erasing the past fifteen years of his life. As a result, Chris believes that he is still living in the year 1916, before the war began, and has forgotten all the events of his adult life, including his marriage to his wife, Kitty.

Chris's return brings together several key women in his life: Kitty, his wife; Jenny, his cousin and confidante; and Margaret, the woman Chris had loved before his marriage. Each of these women reacts to Chris's return in different ways, and their relationships with him are complicated by his amnesia.
The Return of the Soldier is a poignant exploration of how war disrupts not just the lives of soldiers, but also the emotional and psychological lives of those around them.

This antiquarian book contains Alexandre Dumas's 1846 novel, "Captain Paul". A romantic romp of brave heroes, devious villains, desperate battles, and true love, this epic tale of high adventure and daring-do is highly recommended for fans of Dumas's work, and would make for a fantastic addition to any bookshelf. The novel is loosely based on the exploits of John Paul Jones, a captain in the American Navy during the revolutionary war. Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was a famous French writer. He is best remembered for his exciting romantic sagas, including "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo". Despite making a great deal of money from his writing, Dumas was almost perpetually penniless thanks to his veritably extravagant lifestyle. His novels have been translated into nearly a hundred different languages, and have inspired over 200 motion pictures. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing this antiquarian book in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
