Summary

Madame Bovary scandalized its readers when it was first published in 1857. And the story itself remains as fresh today as when it was first written, a work that remains unsurpassed in its unveiling of character and society. It tells the tragic story of the romantic but empty-headed Emma Rouault. When Emma marries Charles Bovary, she imagines she will pass into the life of luxury and passion that she reads about in sentimental novels and women's magazines. But Charles is an ordinary country doctor, and provincial life is very different from the romantic excitement for which she yearns. In her quest to realize her dreams she takes a lover, Rodolphe, and begins a devastating spiral into deceit and despair. And Flaubert captures every step of this catastrophe with sharp-eyed detail and a wonderfully subtle understanding of human emotions.

"This is a history and not a glorification of Mr. Polly, and I tell of things as they were with him”
So writes H.G Wells towards the end of his story of Mr Polly and indeed the narrator’s voice throughout the book leaves us altogether ambivalent about his protagonist.
The diminutive Everyman of the story is neither fully hero nor villain.

A book that, although gently humorous, gives us no facile answers to life's frustrations and conundrums, but leaves us with a fitting reflaction of our own often bewildering existence.
Narrated by Simon Hester and with original music.

At first his project baffles everyone, but eventually his dedication proves infectious, with delightful results. First published in 1904, The Napoleon of Notting Hill was Chesterton's first novel. It has been called the best first novel by any author in the twentieth century. Newly designed and typeset by Waking Lion Press.THE NAPOLEON OF NOTTING HILL BOOK 5: On the evening of the third of October, twenty years after the great victory of Notting Hill, which gave it the dominion of London, King Auberon came, as of old, out of Kensington Palace.
