Sinopsis

A User-Friendly Introduction to Interpreting and Understanding God's Word
Many Christians view the Bible as a book that they know they should read, but it can be hard to know where to start. If they spend time regularly reading it, it can often feel like a chore to be checked off for the day. What many miss is that the Bible is a sweeping story full of narrative, poetry, and letters—something to be marveled at and enjoyed.
In The Epic Story of the Bible, Greg Gilbert aims to teach Christians—or those interested in Christianity—what the Bible is and how to study it. Adapted from the ESV Story of Redemption Bible, Gilbert examines major themes woven throughout Scripture and shows readers how to understand its various genres, helping them appreciate the word of God with less confusion and greater confidence.

The Holy Roman Empire traces its origins to a time of shifting power dynamics, spiritual authority, and the enduring legacy of Rome. It was neither wholly holy, Roman, nor an empire in the traditional sense, but it stood as a significant political and spiritual entity in European history for nearly a millennium. The story begins with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 CE, which left a power vacuum in Europe. Centuries later, Charlemagne, King of the Franks, would revive the idea of a Roman imperium in the West. In the year 800, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne as Emperor of the Romans, symbolically linking his rule to the legacy of ancient Rome and establishing a precedent for divine sanction of imperial authority.
While Charlemagne’s empire did not last beyond his heirs, his imperial title endured in memory and ambition. The true foundations of the Holy Roman Empire, however, are often credited to Otto I, Duke of Saxony, who became King of East Francia in 936. Through military successes and strong alliances with the Church, Otto consolidated his power. In 962, he was crowned Emperor by Pope John XII, an act widely regarded as the formal beginning of the Holy Roman Empire. Otto’s coronation re-established the notion of a Christian emperor in the West and initiated a tradition that would persist for centuries.
This early period also marked the beginning of what would become a recurring struggle between secular rulers and the papacy for supremacy. The Investiture Controversy, though it would fully erupt later, had its roots in the growing tensions between emperors who believed they had the right to appoint bishops and popes who insisted on spiritual independence. This rivalry between church and state would shape the development of the empire’s political structure, often blurring the lines between religious and secular authority.

Soren Kierkegaard was a Danish philosopher, theologian, and religious author interested in human psychology. He is regarded as a leading pioneer of existentialism and one of the greatest philosophers of the 19th Century.

In Fear and Trembling, Kierkegaard aimed to understand the anxiety that must have been present in Abraham when God commanded him to offer his son as a human sacrifice. Abraham had a choice to complete the task or to forget it. He resigned himself to the loss of his son, acting according to his faith. In other words, one must be willing to give up all his or her earthly possessions in infinite resignation and must also be willing to give up whatever it is that he or she loves more than God. Abraham had passed the test -- his love for God proved greater than anything else in him. And because a good and just Creator would not want a father to kill his son, God intervened at the last moment to prevent the sacrifice.

One of the greatest saints in the history of the Church, Saint Gertrude the Great began life in 1256. She was given to the schools of a Benedictine monastery. She excelled in intellectual activity and learning, but, in her twenties, she became most preoccupied with theology, the Fathers, and the Scriptures. Her holiness was hidden, as she constantly prayed to God to keep it, but she manifested miracles and experienced raptures. Writing many works of piety, she endeavored to raise others to the rarefied sanctity which she was privileged to have obtained early in life.
With her devotion from a young age, Saint Gertrude also received numerous visions of Our Lord and Our Lady. Before St. Margaret Mary a few centuries later, St. Gertrude was one of the first to gain revelations about the Sacred Heart of Jesus and how best to honor It in private devotion. Her concern was for His immense charity to become Incarnate, to die for our sins, to institute the Blessed Sacrament, and to offer Himself as an eternal Victim for our sake—all of which Christ Himself explained to her the mystical significance of. Based on these revelations, Love, Peace, and Joy provides little-known ways to gain great graces quickly and advance rapidly in Divine Charity. Most important among these practices is the placement of our prayers in the Sacred Heart of Jesus, that they might be perfected and made more pleasing to God. The insights received by Saint Gertrude are matched by very few other mystics', showing her privileges before the Throne of God; let this book show you the secrets of her own sanctity, concealed in the Heart of the Divine Redeemer.
