This meticulously curated anthology, edited by Grafton Elliot Smith and T. H. Pear, delves deeply into the phenomenon of shell shock, offering readers a comprehensive look into both the trauma experienced by soldiers and the evolving understanding of mental health in the aftermath of World War I. Through its diverse collection of essays, each piece serves as a vital testament to the transformation of psychological science, while resonating with the grim realities faced by those who endured the battlefields. The contributors to this volume are pioneers in their fields, drawing from their profound experiences and insights into early 20th-century psychology and psychiatry. For readers seeking to comprehend the multifaceted impact of warfare, this anthology offers a unique opportunity to engage with a range of reflections, theories, and case studies. Such an assemblage fosters an enriched educational experience, enhancing awareness of historical shifts in medical and psychological practices. The diversity of the essays not only broadens the reader's insight into the complex dialogue surrounding shell shock but also reinforces the enduring relevance of these discussions in today's context, underscoring the anthology's significance as a seminal work.

Criminology is the scientific study of crime, criminals, and the criminal justice system. It examines the nature, causes, and consequences of criminal behavior, seeking to understand why individuals engage in crime and how society responds to such acts. Criminology is not limited to merely studying criminal acts, but also investigates the societal reactions to crime, the policies implemented to combat it, and the broader impact on social structures. As a multidisciplinary field, criminology draws upon theories and methods from sociology, psychology, law, and political science, making it a vital area of study for both academic and practical purposes.
The evolution of criminology dates back to ancient civilizations, where crime and punishment were often directly linked to religious or cultural beliefs. In these early stages, crime was seen as a moral failing or an act that required divine intervention. However, as societies progressed, the understanding of crime became more secular and focused on the individual and social factors influencing criminal behavior. During the 18th century, the field of criminology began to take shape with the introduction of the Classical School of Criminology, which argued that individuals have free will and make rational decisions based on pleasure and pain. This theory laid the foundation for modern criminal law and criminal justice systems.

An American soldier vividly recounts leading a platoon through the most chaotic and significant year of the Vietnam War.In 1968, 1st Lieutenant Robin Bartlett was reassigned to the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). He suddenly found himself at the “repo-depo” in Bien Hoa. His unit had more helicopter support than any other in Vietnam. That meant immediate support was only minutes away. But It also meant that Bartlett’s platoon could deploy at a moment’s notice. And they did.It was the worst of times to be a platoon leader in Vietnam, let alone a grunt serving in a combat unit. Beyond the brutality of combat, Bartlett faced a crisis of commitment as the war rapidly lost support both at home and among the soldiers he led. Fifty years later, Bartlett shares these harrowing experiences in a fast-moving, first-person narrative that shines a light on the horror, fear, anguish, and sometimes illogical humor of that war.Finalist, 2023 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Awards

From the time Ted Simon set off around the world on his Triumph, at the age of 42, his life has been, literally, an open book. In everything he has written since that journey began no-one has been more forthcoming about his life, his thoughts and feelings, than Ted. Yet almost nothing is known about his life before that journey.
So that his own children – one son, two grandsons – would have a better idea of who he is or was, he began to write an account which, inevitably, grew into a book. These are the earlier “interruptions” of a rich and varied life narrated by the man himself.

Bernini - His Life and His Rome

    Franco Mormando

Sculptor, architect, painter, playwright, and scenographer, Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680) was the last of the great universal artistic geniuses of early modern Italy, placed by both contemporaries and posterity in the same exalted company as Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo. And his artistic vision remains palpably present today, through the countless statues, fountains, and buildings that transformed Rome into the Baroque theater that continues to enthrall tourists today. It is perhaps not surprising that this artist who defined the Baroque should have a personal life that itself was, well, baroque. As Franco Mormando’s dazzling biography reveals, Bernini was a man driven by many passions, possessed of an explosive temper and a hearty sex drive, and he lived a life as dramatic as any of his creations. Drawing on archival sources, letters, diaries, and—with a suitable skepticism—a hagiographic account written by Bernini’s son (who portrays his father as a paragon of virtue and piety), Mormando leads us through Bernini’s many feuds and love affairs, scandals and sins. He sets Bernini’s raucous life against a vivid backdrop of Baroque Rome, bustling and wealthy, and peopled by churchmen and bureaucrats, popes and politicians, schemes and secrets. The result is a seductively readable biography, stuffed with stories and teeming with life—as wild and unforgettable as Bernini’s art. No one who has been bewitched by the Baroque should miss it.
