These victories not only increased Napoleon’s reputation but also solidified his status as one of France’s most brilliant generals. By 1799, France was embroiled in political instability, and the government—the Directory—was weakened by corruption and poor leadership. Amid this instability, Napoleon seized the moment to take control.
