An illuminating exploration of the tensions between self and society in the age of revolutions.

The eighteenth century was a time of cultural friction: individuals began to assert greater independence and there was a new emphasis on social equality. In this surprising history, Lynn Hunt examines women's expanding societal roles, such as using tea to facilitate conversation between the sexes in Britain. In France, women also pushed boundaries by becoming artists, and printmakers' satiric takes on the elite gave the lower classes a chance to laugh at the upper classes and imagine the potential of political upheaval. Hunt also explores how promotion in French revolutionary armies was based on men's singular capabilities, rather than noble blood, and how the invention of financial instruments such as life insurance and national debt related to a changing idea of national identity. Wide-ranging and thought-provoking, The Revolutionary Self is a fascinating exploration of the conflict between individualism and the group ties that continues to shape our lives today.

The French Revolution did not emerge suddenly but was the result of long-standing tensions within French society. At the heart of these tensions was the Ancien Régime, a rigid social and political system that had governed France for centuries. Under this system, society was divided into three estates: the clergy, the nobility, and the commoners. The First Estate, consisting of the clergy, and the Second Estate, made up of the nobility, enjoyed significant privileges, including exemptions from many taxes. Meanwhile, the Third Estate, which comprised the vast majority of the population, bore the heaviest tax burden despite having little political representation. This deep inequality fueled resentment and set the stage for revolutionary change.
Economic struggles further exacerbated the crisis. Throughout the 18th century, France faced mounting financial difficulties due to costly wars, including its involvement in the American Revolution. These expenses left the country with a massive debt, which the government attempted to resolve by increasing taxes on the already overburdened Third Estate. Additionally, poor harvests in the late 1780s led to food shortages and rising bread prices, making daily survival difficult for many commoners. Hunger and economic hardship created widespread unrest, as people began to question a system that seemed indifferent to their suffering. The monarchy, under King Louis XVI, proved incapable of addressing these issues effectively. His lavish spending and reluctance to implement financial reforms only deepened public frustration.
While economic and social tensions played a crucial role in the revolution’s origins, the ideas of the Enlightenment provided the ideological foundation for change. Thinkers such as John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Voltaire criticized absolute monarchy and promoted principles of liberty, equality, and individual rights.

Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little, later Malik el-Shabazz; May 19, 1925 - February 21, 1965) was an American Muslim minister and human rights activist who was a prominent figure during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. A spokesman for the Nation of Islam until 1964, he was a vocal advocate for Black empowerment and the promotion of Islam within the Black community. On February 21, 1965, he was assassinated in New York City. Three Nation members were charged with the murder and given indeterminate life sentences; in 2021, two of the convictions were vacated. Speculation about the assassination and whether it was conceived or aided by leading or additional members of the Nation, or with law enforcement agencies, has persisted for decades.
