Katie Porter was elected to Congress as a Democrat in 2018 and used her signature whiteboard to take CEOs and corrupt government officials to task in Congressional hearings. I SWEAR: Politics Is Messier Than My Minivan is a witty, down-to-earth exploration of what it's like to serve in Congress, particularly as a single mom. Katie reveals how her challenges as an Iowa farmgirl diverted her to the Ivy League and how she quickly mastered the art of making CEOs and cabinet members squirm when they bluff and bloviate instead of doing the job for America. She provides whiteboard lessons on where campaign donations go, how to fight the corporations that cheat you, and how to conduct her trademark robust oversight.

Before Amsterdam, there was a dazzling North Sea port at the hub of the known world: the city of Antwerp.

In the Age of Exploration, Antwerp was sensational like nineteenth-century Paris or twentieth-century New York. It was somewhere anything could happen or at least be believed: killer bankers, easy kisses, a market in secrets and every kind of heresy. For half the sixteenth century, it was the place for breaking rules—religious, sexual, intellectual.

And it was a place of change. Thomas More opened Utopia there, Erasmus puzzled over money and exchanges, William Tyndale sheltered there and smuggled out his Bible in English until he was killed.

But when Antwerp rebelled with the Dutch against the Spanish and lost, all that glory was buried and its true history rewritten. Mutinous troops burned the city records, trying to erase its true history.

In Europe's Babylon, Michael Pye sets out to rediscover the city that was lost and bring its wilder days to life using every kind of clue: novels, paintings, songs, schoolbooks, letters, and the archives of Venice, London, and the Medici.

The French Famine of 1693-1694, one of the most devastating in the nation's history, was deeply influenced by a confluence of environmental, social, and political factors that shaped its catastrophic outcome. To understand the severity of this famine, it is crucial to examine the conditions that preceded it, including the weather patterns, economic environment, and political climate of late 17th-century France.
At the heart of the famine was a series of harsh weather conditions that led to poor harvests in 1693. A combination of torrential rains, flooding, and unseasonably cold temperatures during the growing season caused widespread crop failure. The heavy rainfall ruined crops such as wheat, barley, and oats, essential staples for the population. In particular, the harsh winter of 1693–1694 exacerbated the problem by delaying planting and further destroying the few crops that had managed to survive. This extreme weather pattern, which was part of a broader climate event known as the "Little Ice Age," contributed to reduced food production and severe shortages across France.
In addition to the challenging weather, the economic and social conditions in France played a significant role in magnifying the effects of the famine. By the late 17th century, the French economy had been heavily strained by costly wars, including the Nine Years' War, and the lavish spending of Louis XIV. The country’s infrastructure was ill-equipped to handle such widespread agricultural distress. The peasants, who made up the majority of the population, were already burdened with heavy taxes and had limited resources to survive such a crisis. With most of the population living in rural areas, food shortages hit them hardest, leading to widespread hunger and suffering.

Menopause: so many symptoms, so few remedies, so many years, so few heads-ups.
In Steamy, you’ll find forty-five of the ever-expanding list of things people can encounter when going through The Change, including challenges (such as #4 Night Sweats and #21 Anxiety) and boons (such as #41 Individuation and #45 Fewer Shits). In this raucous memoir, Susan Holbrook opens up an experience still constrained by cultural silences and myths. Steamy is honest, vulnerable, gross, and might just be the funniest book you’ve ever read about menopause, or anything else (see #37 Bloating). If, at a certain stage of life, you find yourself sucker-punched by a sweaty fistful of symptoms you can’t believe no one told you about, Steamy is for you – and for all the other hot-and-bothereds out there.

How do you begin your life again when you’ve lost everything you’ve worked for and your dreams have been shattered?
That was the question beloved Australian author Belinda Alexandra faced one freezing winter night when she ran from her home in terror, clutching only her wallet, her phone and her latest manuscript on a USB stick.
To pull herself up from rock bottom, Belinda drew strength from the real life women who had inspired her bestselling historical fiction: her mother, Tatiana Morosoff, a White Russian who had fled a home more than once due to wars and revolutions; Virginia Hall, an American who lost her leg in an accident but went on to become one of the most revered Allied agents in World War II France; Carmen Amaya, who despite being born into abject poverty in Barcelona rose to become the greatest Flamenco dancer of all time; Edna Walling, who lost her own dream home in a freak fire but created garden designs that made her one of Australia’s most celebrated landscape designers.
They were women who had faced seemingly insurmountable challenges and found ways to forge ahead on their own terms.
In a compelling and exquisite blend of memoir and history, Belinda shows readers that, no matter what challenge they might be facing, there is always the possibility of building a bold life full of meaning again from the ashes.

Few eras are easier to let the imagination run wild than the Middle Ages, which have often been coined the Dark Ages based on a perceived lack of progress and information.[1] Indeed, we can say that it is not completely unfounded because we know less about that historical period compared to those that come after it. In addition, it is a period marked by a great number of deaths caused by plague epidemics, crusades, and inquisitorial persecutions. Often, researchers are not even sure how and why certain events happened, and these mysteries still occupy the attention of historians.
This era was very harsh, difficult, and often gloomy. In that greyness, burdened by various fears, people were looking for something that would light up their lives and bring them a feeling of beauty and joy. People experienced all things and events around them more intensely than people do today. They often exaggerated the events that happened, giving them a mystical and divine character. For this reason, medieval sources are taken with a grain of salt and are first carefully examined before believing.
At the same time, some historical mysteries about the era may never be solved, if only because the relevant excavated material has been lost or the archaeological site has been destroyed. In other cases, it is because new evidence is unlikely to emerge, or the surviving evidence is too vague to lead to a consensus. Of course, the lack of answers only makes these enigmas more intriguing. For example, the topic of witchcraft in Europe, once considered marginal and even frivolous, has become the subject of international debate among historians since the early 1970s. However, only a few of the many studies have paid attention to the sabbath - the nocturnal gathering of witches and sorceresses - even though the sabbath is clearly of crucial importance in the history of witchcraft and witch-hunting.
