Sinossi

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) was a German mathematician, philosopher, scientist and diplomat who invented calculus in addition to many other branches of mathematics and statistics. He has been called the "last universal genius" due to his knowledge and skills in different fields and because such people became less common during the Industrial Revolution and spread of specialized labor after his lifetime. As a philosopher, Leibniz was a leading representative of 17th-century rationalism and idealism. Leibniz's philosophical thinking appears fragmented because his philosophical writings consist mainly of a multitude of short pieces: journal articles, manuscripts published long after his death, and letters to correspondents.Leibniz dated his beginning as a philosopher to his Discourse on Metaphysics, which he composed in 1686 as a commentary on a running dispute between Nicolas Malebranche and Antoine Arnauld. We propose it to our readers today in the English translation by George Redington Montgomery (1909).

A warm-hearted guide to Buddhist practice for those ready to contend with the reality that enlightenment—the realization of non-self—can't be achieved by the self.

A well-known spiritual saying goes, "Enlightenment is an accident. But we can make ourselves more accident-prone." As an authentic American Zen takes shape, enlightenment continues to be misunderstood as a project to be completed, a goal to be achieved, or a prize to be awarded. Tim Burkett's new book unhooks enlightenment from the hot air balloon of ego and brings it back down to earth.

Drawing on stories of his first teacher, the Zen master Shunryu Suzuki (author of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind), and Burkett's decades of practice and teaching, he reveals how to live in the world with a deep joy that comes from embracing the work and play of this very moment. With the wisdom and humor of a seasoned practitioner familiar with all manner of eccentric fixations and silly dead-ends, he offers views and practices we can use to support the paradoxical process of letting enlightenment happen on its own.

Summary of Erik Larson's Dead Wake is a non-fiction account of the German Unterseeboot, or U-boat, sinking of Lusitania, a British merchant vessel belonging to Cunard Line, on May 7, 1915 and its aftermath.
On the night of May 6, 1915, Captain William Thomas reassured the passengers in the first-class lounge as the ship approached the ‘area of war’ off the southern coast of Ireland.
The Great War, later known as World War I, had been raging in France since July 28, 1914 following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie.
In August of 1914, President Woodrow Wilson’s wife, Ellen, died of Bright’s disease. Her death left Wilson grief stricken. Two days before her death, Britain entered the war in Europe. Wilson chose to keep America neutral in the war and refused to allow British and German warships to enter US ports.
In September of 1914, German submarines…

I Don't Want to Go to School...

“I don’t want to gp. I just can’t do it anymore.” "My stomach hurts, and I'm afraid of throwing up." "It sucks. What’s the point.” "I'm tired. I need a break. "I'm just fine where I am, in my room."
Since the health crisis, Thierry Delcourt has observed a considerable increase in children who cannot or no longer want to go to school, not only for problems of violence, racketeering and bullying, but rather for much more troubling reasons—hostility, laziness, convenience or opportunism. According to the author, who has cross-checked data from National Education and the CNED, absenteeism at school has increased by 10% over the last 3 years.
This book aims to enlighten anxious parents, disoriented teachers, and psychologists who are overwhelmed by these situations, and to provide an approach to understand and overcome these obstacles that lead to school dropout and, in the long run, to school failure. Each chapter refers to a particular situation, analyzes the reason for it and then offers advice on how to combat this scourge.
