ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK
Kindred by Octavia E. Butler tells the story of Dana, a contemporary Black woman who is mysteriously transported to the antebellum South. She finds herself repeatedly traveling between her present and the 19th-century Maryland plantation of her ancestors. Her trips are triggered by her distant ancestor, a white slave owner named Rufus Weylin, whenever his life is in danger. Dana must navigate the brutal realities of slavery while trying to ensure the survival of Rufus, as his existence is crucial to her own family line. The narrative explores themes of power, identity, race, and the lasting impact of slavery through the lens of Dana's experiences. Her journey forces her to confront the violence, dehumanization, and moral compromises inherent in the institution of slavery, as she struggles to retain her sense of self.
