Sinopse

Coral Facts explores the fascinating and critical world of coral reefs, vibrant underwater ecosystems often called the rainforests of the sea. These structures, built by tiny coral polyps over millennia, support a quarter of all marine life and protect coastlines. The book highlights the symbiotic relationship between coral and zooxanthellae, an algae, that is fundamental to reef productivity. It details the threats these ecosystems face, including climate change and destructive fishing. The book examines the ecological importance of coral reefs and the economic considerations for communities dependent on them. It presents evidence from diverse scientific fields, illustrating the impacts of climate change and other stressors. The book uniquely focuses on the interconnectedness of coral reefs and human societies.Coral Facts progresses from introducing basic concepts to delving into complex topics like ocean acidification and coral bleaching. It offers a roadmap for building a more sustainable future for these vital marine ecosystems. The book aims to equip readers with the knowledge to understand challenges and advocate for effective ocean conservation and sustainable fishing practices.

Inside our heads we carry around an infinite and endlessly unfolding map of the world. Navigation is one of the most ancient neural abilities we have—older than language. In Dark and Magical Places, Christopher Kemp embarks on a journey to discover the remarkable extent of what our minds can do.

Fueled by his own spatial shortcomings, Kemp describes the brain regions that orient us in space and the specialized neurons that do it. Place cells. Grid cells. He examines how the brain plans routes, recognizes landmarks, and makes sure we leave a room through a door instead of trying to leave through a painting. From the secrets of supernavigators like the indigenous hunters of the Bolivian rainforest to the confusing environments inhabited by people with place blindness, Kemp charts the myriad ways in which we find our way and explains the cutting-edge neuroscience behind them.

How did Neanderthals navigate? Why do even seasoned hikers stray from the trail? What spatial skills do we inherit from our parents? How can smartphones and our reliance on GPS devices impact our brains? In engaging, engrossing language, Kemp unravels the mysteries of navigating and links the brain's complex functions to the effects that diseases like Alzheimer's, types of amnesia, and traumatic brain injuries have on our perception of the world around us.

Geoffroy Delorme does not fit in the human world. As he gets older, he disappears into the woods at night, drawn to animal life. One night, an encounter with a deer changes his life: from then on, he knows he wants to live among them.

Delorme becomes a creature of the forest. He learns to live without a tent or sleeping bag and forage for food. He blends in with the deer and, slowly, they accept him. He witnesses their births and deaths, courtship and battles, ostracism and friendship over the cycles of their lives. Among the deer, he experiences the beauty, pain, fear, and joy of a life lived as a part of nature.

In his final year in the forest, Delorme meets a woman walking through the trees. He knows he can stay in the forest and die with his friends—or he can leave and speak their truth to a human world.

Deer Man is a moving story of what it's like to be an outsider and how forming connections with the natural world can help us feel less alone. A unique and powerful window into how far one human is willing to go to understand an animal, Deer Man asks us to never take for granted the flora and fauna of our world, and to work for their protection in whatever ways we can.
