  In spite of Nicea's condemnation of Arius in 325, Arianism was far from dead. For decades after Nicea, political intrigue and personality clashes continued to confuse the doctrinal issues. Additionally, the line separating othodoxy from Arianism was blurred by a number of "semi-Arians" who agreed with the theology of orthodoxy but continued to object to the "homoousios" of the Nicene Formula. In this milieu, Athanasius of Alexandria tirelessly worked to cut through the confusion and restore unity. Sometimes alone against the world, Athanasius rejected all attempts at unity through ambiguity and strove for unity through clarity. His Four Discourses Against the Arians are the culmination of these efforts. By these, Athanasius successfully defended the theology of the Nicene Formula and united the orthodox Church.   Netta Syrett was born Janet Syrett on 17th March 1865 in Ramsgate, Kent, one of 13 children. 
   
  She was initially educated at home by her mother before those responsibilities passed to a German Governess and then, aged 11, Netta went to the North London Collegiate School. From there she attended Hughes Hall, Cambridge and completed a three-year course for a full teaching certificate in only one year. 
   
  She taught for two years at a Swansea school before moving to teach at the London Polytechnic School for Girls.  
   
  Her friend and colleague, Mabel Beardsley, introduced her to her brother, Aubrey, the famed illustrator and the then art editor for the illustrated quarterly ‘The Yellow Book’, and its literary editor, the American Henry Harland, who then published 3 of her short stories. Her writing is also notable for its use of women characters who were less dependent on others and the society around them and were able to forge new independent paths. 
   
  Her debut novel, ‘Nobody's Fault’ (1896) was the beginning of a long and prolific output. For the next several years her writing and teaching careers ran alongside each other.   
   
  A highly critical review of her controversial, for those times, play ‘The Finding of Nancy’ suggesting it was an autobiography led to calls from overly moral parents for her to resign her teaching position.  Netta now concentrated solely on her writing, only retiring in 1939. 
   
  Netta Syrett died after a long illness in London on 15th December 1943.

  Kidnapped

  Published in 1886, the same year as Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Kidnapped is one of Stevenson's most enduringly popular novels. At its center is a historical event: the murder of Colin Campbell, the 'Red Fox' of Glenure in Scotland. David Balfour, whose father dies leaving him with nothing to live on, goes to live with a cruel and miserly uncle. The uncle attempts to have the boy killed and then has him kidnapped and taken to sea. The ship is wrecked and the novel follows David and and his friend Alan as they journey across the Highlands through numerous dangers including witnessing and becoming suspects in the murder of the Red Fox.     
  Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on November 13, 1850. Although he was expected to pursue his father's career as an engineer, he became a lawyer. He attended Edinburgh University where he also declared himself agnostic. Robert suffered from tuberculosis and during his trip to France he wrote An Inland Voyage (1879). Luis met Fanny Osbourne, an American, and married her in 1880 in California. During his extensive travels to find favorable climate, he wrote numerous essays, poems and romances. He overcame his illness in the Marquesas Islands in 1888. He died on the island of Samoa on Dec 3, 1894, where he had settled in 1890.
