Sinopse

This edited book comprises a selection of essays inspired by the presentations delivered during the workshop 'Open Up Museums! Prospects and challenges of Accessibility, Diversity and Inclusion', co-organised in the Spring of 2022 by three EU-funded projects – reCreating Europe, DANCING, and inDICEs, and hosted by MUSE – Museo delle Scienze, and Mart – Museo di arte moderna e contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto.
In the book, academics and cultural heritage practitioners reflect on how to promote 'openness' in the cultural sector. Exploring the concepts of Accessibility, Diversity and Inclusion, they offer different views on institutions and practices, giving substance to the multifold concept of 'open' culture in museums.

"Contrary to movie and legend, we now know that the defenders of the Alamo in the war for Texan independence—including Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and William B. Travis—did not die under brilliant sunlight, defending their positions against hordes of Mexican infantry. Instead, the Mexicans launched a predawn attack, surmounting the walls in darkness, forcing a wild melee inside the fort before many of its defenders had even awoken. In this book, Dr. Tucker, after deep research into recently discovered Mexican accounts and forensic evidence, informs us that the traditional myth of the Alamo is even more off-base: most of the Alamo’s defenders died in breakouts from the fort, cut down by Santa Anna’s cavalry that was positioned to intercept the escapees. A number of the Alamo’s defenders did hang on inside the fort, fighting back every way they could, but most of the Texans, in two groups, broke out of the fort after the enemy had broken in, and the primary fights took place on the plain outside. Still fighting desperately, the Texans’ retreat was halted by cavalry, and afterward, Mexican lancers plied their trade with charges into the midst of the remaining resisters. Notoriously, Santa Anna burned the bodies of the Texans who had dared stand against him. But as this book proves in thorough detail, the funeral pyres were well outside the fort—where the two separate groups of escapees fell on the plain, rather than in the Alamo itself. "

“Let the muse of history be silent, and make way for genetics.” Jean Tulard.
“Fascinating.” Jean-Noël Fabiani, Professor Emeritus, Chair of the History of Medicine.

Until recent years, many mysteries and rumors have surrounded Napoleon. Was Napoleon's body taken by the British and placed in Westminster Abbey? Was he poisoned with arsenic? Did he die of hereditary stomach cancer, as the English claimed, or of hepatitis and dysentery rampant on that unhealthy island? Was Napoleon III descended from the Emperor? Did the Emperor's physician remove Napoleon's penis after his death on St. Helena in 1821?
To answer these and many other questions, Professor Gérard Lucotte spent twelve years working on this subject. He was commissioned by Prince Charles Napoléon (a descendant of the Emperor, through the branch descended from Jérôme Bonaparte, the Emperor's youngest brother) and Count Walewski (a descendant of Napoleon the First’s natural son) to work on Napoléon's DNA. Thanks to his genetics laboratory and electron microscope, he has achieved a gigantic feat that will astound all Napoleon enthusiasts.

The award-winning film version of this "world-changing true story" was featured by PBS across country during Black History Month 2025. The film highlighted the startling relevance of a riveting trial more than half a century ago when a black revolutionary, Black Panther Party co-founder Huey Newton, faced execution for the death of a white policeman -- with totally unexpected results. This audiobook was narrated by Rua, the same actor who voiced Huey Newton in the documentary. It allows listeners to take a ringside seat at the case that transformed the traditional all white male "jury of one's peers" to a jury truly drawn from a cross-section of the community, including women and minorities. The book also provides a rare look behind the scenes into life-or-death jury deliberations and features comments from key trial participants and observers. Pioneering television journalist Belva Davis vividly described the participants in that historic trial: "The Newton trial cast of characters would be hard to put together for a Hollywood film --- the defense attorney, the prosecutor, the jury foreman, the makeup of the jury, Newton himself." Huey's older brother Melvin Newton captured the essence of that historic trial, inspiring the book's title: "The prosecution represents the state -- the People of California vs. Huey Newton was putting Huey Newton on trial. As it turned out, [my brother] Huey put the United States on trial."
Award-winning author Lise Pearlman (www.lisepearlman.com) is a retired judge and the country's leading expert on the 1968 Newton trial. She appeared in Stanley Nelson's top-rated 2015 documentary "The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution" and created the award-winning 2022 film project for which she served as co-producer, American Justice on Trial recently renamed "In the Crosshairs." www.justicemovie.com

At a time when violence in America and Europe dominates the daily news, a groundbreaking new book co-authored by James Gilligan, an eminent psychiatrist who has worked with criminals, and David A.J. Richards, a legal scholar of toxic patriarchy, illuminates the ways in which Shakespeare offers unique insights into the causes of violence as well as its prevention. Now a riveting new audio production, Holding a Mirror Up to Nature: Shame, Guilt, and Violence in Shakespeare takes advantage of scenes performed by acclaimed actors to dramatize how much Shakespeare’s tragic heroes exhibit the psychology of those who commit violence in the contemporary world. The voice of British-American actor John Douglas Thompson called “perhaps the greatest Shakespeare interpreter in contemporary theater,” together with women’s parts spoken by Shakespeare & Company’s distinguished Tod Randolph, and narration by award-winning theater star Nigel Gore, orchestrate this tour de force audiobook that belongs in the listening library of everyone who loves Shakespeare and is curious about what causes and what prevents violence.

YOU NEVER LOVE A BOOK THE WAY YOU LOVE A BOOK WHEN YOU ARE TEN.

Writing as Lemony Snicket, Daniel Handler has led several generations of young readers into that special and curious space of being hopelessly lost, and joyfully finding yourself, in the essential strangeness of literature. The wondrous and perilous journey of the Baudelaire orphans sprung from the author’s own path, from his childhood discovery of Baudelaire’s poetry through the countless peculiarities of his pursuit of a literary life—abject failure and startling success, breakthrough and breakdown, concordance and controversy—lit along the way by the books and culture he loved best.

At once a personal memoir and a literary exploration, a how-to book and a critical inquiry, a sequence of stories and a series of events, And Then? And Then? What Else? is a book not just for anyone curious about the creator of Lemony Snicket, but for anyone who loved books when they were a child, and still loves them now.
