Sinopse

Madame Mireille's ocean-side parlour, Les Trois Dames Jouissantes, is one of the last houses holding to the tenets of classic burlesque. They specialize in raunchy comedy sketches, undulating fan dances, chorus lines and, of course, the striptease. In post-war Maritimes, Madame’s burlesque house enjoys notoriety thanks to an all-female cast combining the smart with the sensual.

It was this reputation that attracted the troupe's two newest members. Ginger, the saucy redhead, has been around the block a few times. She might come on strong, but she’s a master of the comedy striptease. Orchid is young, new to the stage, and embodies all that is innocent—or so she'd have you believe!

Secrets abound behind the scenes, and it’ll take more than slippery fingers to bring them to the surface.

Historical lesbian romance with an erotic edge.

A guide to breaking free from the enduring, and sometimes damaging, behavioral patterns learned in childhood.
When trying to deal with our current troubles and anxieties, it can be deeply irritating to be asked to consider our childhoods. They happened so long ago; we can probably barely remember, let alone relate to, the little person we once were. But one of the most powerful explanations for why we may, as adults, be struggling, is that we were denied the opportunity to fully be ourselves in our earliest years. Perhaps we were over-disciplined and cowed, not allowed to be willful or difficult—and so learned to tell white lies and people-please. Or perhaps our caregivers were preoccupied or fragile and so we had to assume the role of parent, burying our true needs and desires deep underground.
When we thoroughly examine our upbringings, the larger implications for our adult selves are clear to see. Once we understand the roots from which our flaws stem, we can set about correcting the harmful behaviors we mistakenly believe to be innate. This book is a guide to better understanding our younger selves in order to shape who we wish to be in the future. It explores to what extent we can pin our actions in the present to our experiences in the past, and how we might then break free from the learned patterns of our childhoods.

Vulnerability Protected: Visions of a Dancing Mind invites readers to reconsider what it truly means to be vulnerable—and why it matters now more than ever. Vulnerability, writes Carol Smaldino, is not a soft cliché but a profound state of openness that touches every part of our being. It is rarely smooth or easy. On the contrary, genuine vulnerability depends on a sense of safety, both physical and emotional, and becomes a gateway to repair and reconnection when we inevitably falter.
In this new work, Smaldino explores how vulnerability is a central ingredient in empathy—for ourselves, for each other, and even for the natural world. When we allow ourselves to feel deeply into our own experience, we become more able to extend that same depth of understanding outward, bridging the gaps that so often divide us.
Against the backdrop of a world marked by polarization and fracture, Vulnerability Protected argues that humanizing ourselves and one another is an urgent task. What we fear or disown in ourselves, Smaldino notes, we are prone to hate, degrade, or project onto others.
Vulnerability Protected offers a path toward making vulnerability authentic, grounded, and transformative—something that can be protected rather than exploited, honored rather than shamed.
Carol Smaldino, LCSW, is a psychotherapist with forty years of experience working with individuals, couples, families, and groups. Her work focuses on the deeper and often hidden parts of the psyche, including the “shadow” emotions we tend to reject or bury. Known for her combination of quick wit, sustained curiosity, and a serious, compassionate approach, she has long been committed to integrating the personal and the political in her writing and speaking.
