Sinopse

In "A History of Ancient Greek Literature," Gilbert Murray provides a comprehensive survey of the literary achievements of ancient Greece, emphasizing the interplay between cultural and historical forces that shaped its production. Murray's approach is both descriptive and analytical, revealing the evolution of genres from epic poetry to drama, while placing significant works within the broader framework of Greek civilization. His prose is marked by clarity and elegance, making complex ideas accessible, while his scholarly rigor situates the literature within philosophical and social contexts, underscoring its enduring influence on Western thought. Gilbert Murray, a distinguished classical scholar and translator, was profoundly influenced by the turbulent socio-political changes of his time, including the Great War. His deep commitment to humanistic values and understanding of classical traditions motivated him to explore the connections between ancient texts and contemporary issues. Murray's illustrious career, including notable academic positions and his advocacy for the demilitarization of education, informed his insights into the deeper meanings of Greek literature as a reflection of the human condition. For millennia, people considered dragons to be real, and the vivid lore of dragons has touched societies from Central America to Europe, and from Egypt to China. The popularity of dragons can easily be assessed by the number of motion pictures that include them as an integral part of their narrative, from the friendly dragons of children’s cartoons to the monsters being bred underground to unleash their horrors on humanity. Indeed, some of humanity’s deepest cultural myths have included dragons, from the Greek and Georgian tale of Jason and the Argonauts to the stories from ancient China that influence modern New Year’s festivities.
The English word “dragon” comes from the Greek word “drakon,” which means “snake,” and while people today may have a hard time imagining a dragon as a simple snake, some scientists think that the international nature of the myth is based on the presence of snakes on nearly every continent. Oxford professor of medieval European literature Carolyne Larrington explained, “The anthropologist David E. Jones has suggested that the dragon myth takes its origins from an innate fear of snakes, genetically encoded in humans from the time of our earliest differentiation from other primates. It is true, of course, that it makes evolutionary sense to avoid dangerous animals of every kind, but it is less clear why people should invent stories about imaginary oversized serpents in particular. Nevertheless, there is a clear benefit to tales that warn children against straying into perilous marshy areas where the serpent might seize them, or against scrambling up treacherous mountain sides in search of monsters and treasure hoards.”

"My name is Marie-Claire. I have had nightmares every night from the time I was 11, when I was kidnapped.”
From the clutches of a French family who tortured her into the grips of an Algerian family who kidnapped and confined her, Marie-Claire went through hell before making a spectacular escape and reaching France.
There are lives whose reality is hard to imagine. Marie-Claire's life is one of those. An unwanted child, born in France, beaten, involved in drug trafficking, she was abandoned, temporarily placed in the care of Social Services, before being returned to her parents—and then she was kidnapped by her stepfather and then by her father’s family that included a radicalized Islamic "tutor." She went through hell for ten years before escaping and starting on a path to recovery in which suffering and hardships kept getting worse, but which eventually led her to the hallowed halls of a French university, from where she continues to fight for the hundreds of children kidnapped by a parent—children who, every year, are victims of their parents' crimes and of institutional abandonment.
She also uses her personal experience to look at mixed marriages, parental authority, parental responsibility. She points out with intelligence and accuracy the blind spots in the law, the cowardice of institutions, and the indifference of public opinion in the face of crimes whose victims are, first and foremost, thousands of children.
The life of Marie-Claire is not a novel.
