  In 1968, biologist John Calhoun began an experiment at the National Institute of Mental Health in Maryland. Calhoun was interested in discovering the factors that drove and limited rodent population growth; he had joined the Rodent Ecology Project in Baltimore in 1946, and he and other members of the project had become interested in understanding how to reduce rodent pests in America’s cities without the use of poison. 
  	Calhoun had already undertaken similar experiments. In fact, this would be his 25th attempt at creating a self-sustaining rodent colony. This experiment was known as the Mortality-Inhibiting Environment for Mice, but informally, it was known as mouse heaven or, more commonly, mouse utopia.  
  	The experiment was carefully crafted, and Calhoun’s previous experience was used to design a “perfect” environment for mice. Free from predators, disease, and stress, with unlimited access to water and plentiful food supplies, the mice involved could, in theory, live much longer lives than mice in the wild. Calhoun built the “mouse universe,” added mice, and provided food and water. Then, for almost five years, he simply watched what happened in mouse utopia. 
  	While it may be fair to wonder how a fairly obscure zoological experiment that took place over 50 years ago has any relevance to modern society, since the experiment ended, people have been using the findings of what became known as the Calhoun Mouse Utopia Experiment to make predictions about human behavior and human societies. In the decades since Calhoun finished his work, this experiment has been used to “prove,” among other things, that modern urban society is doomed, that contemporary society will inevitably lead to lethal levels of overpopulation, and even that political creeds such as communism and socialism are unsustainable.

  The origins of the Taíno people trace back thousands of years to the migrations of Arawakan-speaking groups from South America. Anthropologists and archaeologists believe that the ancestors of the Taíno first emerged in the Orinoco River basin, in what is now Venezuela, before gradually expanding into the Caribbean. These early settlers, known as the Saladoid culture, navigated the waterways of the Caribbean in dugout canoes, moving from the mainland to the Lesser Antilles and eventually reaching the Greater Antilles, where they established permanent settlements. 
  As they adapted to their new island environments, these early migrants developed a distinct culture that would later be recognized as the Taíno civilization. Over generations, they refined agricultural techniques suited to the tropical climate, cultivating staple crops like cassava, maize, and sweet potatoes. Their knowledge of fishing, hunting, and foraging allowed them to thrive in the diverse ecosystems of the Caribbean, from coastal regions to inland forests. 
  By the time Europeans arrived in the late 15th century, the Taíno were the dominant indigenous group across the islands of Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, eastern Cuba, and the Bahamas. Their society had evolved into a structured and hierarchical system led by caciques, or chiefs, who governed villages known as yucayeques. These settlements varied in size, with some growing into major centers of trade, religion, and politics. The Taíno also developed a rich spiritual belief system centered around ancestor worship and nature deities, a tradition that can be traced back to their South American roots.

  The Zhou Dynasty emerged as a dominant force in ancient China following the decline of the Shang Dynasty. Its rise was marked by strategic alliances, military conquests, and the introduction of the Mandate of Heaven, a concept that would define Chinese rulership for centuries. The Zhou people, originally a semi-nomadic tribe living in the Wei River Valley, gradually expanded their influence through diplomacy and warfare, positioning themselves as challengers to Shang authority.  
  King Wen of Zhou played a crucial role in laying the groundwork for the dynasty’s ascent. A respected leader known for his wisdom and virtue, he strengthened alliances with neighboring tribes and promoted administrative reforms that would later become the foundation of Zhou governance. However, it was his son, King Wu, who ultimately led the military campaign that overthrew the Shang. The decisive battle took place at Muye around 1046 BCE, where the Zhou army, though numerically inferior, defeated the Shang forces due to superior strategy and the defection of many Shang soldiers who had grown discontented with their rulers. 
  Following their victory, the Zhou established a new political order centered around the Mandate of Heaven. This doctrine asserted that the right to rule was granted by divine authority, but it was not absolute—rulers had to govern justly and maintain moral integrity to retain legitimacy. If they failed, they could be overthrown, as had been the case with the Shang. This belief not only justified the Zhou conquest but also set a precedent for the dynastic cycle in China.
