Sinopse

In 'Three Lives', Gertrude Stein presents a triptych of narratives that explore the lives of three women—Melanctha, the nameless woman from 'The Good Anna', and the eponymous Anna. Stein's distinctive literary style is characterized by its rhythmic repetitiveness, fragmented syntax, and innovative use of language, which challenges traditional narrative forms and encapsulates the complexities of human experience. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century America, these stories intricately weave themes of identity, desire, and the subtleties of domestic life, offering a poignant commentary on the societal confines placed upon women of that era. Stein, a central figure in the modernist movement, drew inspiration from her own multicultural upbringing and avant-garde experiences in Paris's literary circles. Her groundbreaking approach to prose reflects her desire to break free from conventional storytelling, mirroring her progressive views on sexuality, gender, and individuality. Through 'Three Lives', Stein channels her innovative spirit into her characters, bestowing upon them a unique voice that reverberates with authenticity amidst the constraints of society. Recommended for readers who seek to understand the complexities of modernist literature and women's struggles during the early 20th century, 'Three Lives' not only marks a significant contribution to Stein's oeuvre but also to feminist literature as a whole. This book invites a deep contemplation of life's rhythms and the inner lives of its characters, making it a crucial read for both enthusiasts of literary modernism and those interested in the nuanced portrayals of women's experiences.

"Lady Susan," a novella by Jane Austen, offers readers a departure from her more well-known novels like "Pride and Prejudice" and "Sense and Sensibility." Written in the form of letters, this epistolary work provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of Lady Susan Vernon, a character who stands apart from Austen's typical heroines.

The novella's protagonist, Lady Susan, is a cunning and manipulative widow, quite unlike the virtuous heroines that populate Austen's other works. Lady Susan's sharp wit and calculated charm serve as the driving force behind the narrative. Through her letters, we witness her artful maneuvering as she navigates the complexities of society, orchestrates advantageous marriages, and simultaneously manages her own affairs.

Austen's choice of the epistolary form allows readers to witness the inner workings of Lady Susan's mind as she artfully weaves webs of deception and manipulation. The novella showcases the power of language and rhetoric in social interactions, with Lady Susan employing her mastery of words to control the perceptions of those around her. Her character is both captivating and repulsive, offering a unique exploration of the darker facets of human nature.

Despite Lady Susan's morally dubious actions, Austen manages to infuse the novella with her trademark wit and humor. The characters surrounding Lady Susan, from her confidante Alicia Johnson to her would-be son-in-law Reginald De Courcy, serve as foils to her cunning, allowing for moments of comedic tension and irony.

"Lady Susan" is a shorter work compared to Austen's full-length novels, but it remains a testament to her ability to craft engaging characters and intricate social dynamics. In this novella, Austen provides a window into a world of manipulation, ambition, and social stratagems, all while maintaining her distinctive style and narrative prowess.

James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was born on the 2nd February 1882 in Dublin into a middle-class family, and the eldest of ten surviving siblings
Admired as a brilliant student he briefly attended the Christian Brothers-run O'Connell School before excelling at the Jesuit schools of Clongowes and Belvedere. From there he went on to attend University College Dublin from 1898, studying English, French and Italian
In 1902, Joyce was now in his early twenties, and went to Paris to study Medicine but soon abandoned his teachings. Back in Dublin to attend to his dying Mother he met Nora Barnacle. They bonded immediately into a life-long match. Together they decided to emigrate to Europe. The couple lived in Trieste, Rome, Paris, and finally Zürich where Joyce pursued a variety of jobs and ventures to supplement his literary pursuits but none of these paid off.
After publishing a poetry volume, ‘Chamber Music’, in 1907, his short story collection ‘The Dubliners’, in 1914, helped establish his talent in the rapidly changing world.
Although far from home Joyce’s literary heart and works were set in his recollections of Dublin. Characters are close resemblances of family and friends and indeed enemies. His landmark work ‘Ulysses’, published in 1922, is set in the streets and alleyways of the city as it parallels Homer’s Odyssey in a variety of styles including its famed stream of consciousness.
His pen continued to produce classics of the order of ‘A Portrait of the Artist as A Young Man’ and ‘Finnegan’s Wake’ together with several volumes of poetry and a play ‘The Exiles, in 1918.
On the 11th January 1941, Joyce underwent surgery in Zürich for a perforated duodenal ulcer. The next day he fell into a coma. On the 13th after a brief period of lucidity in which he called for his wife and son he passed. He was 58.

Charles Dickens’s The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain (1848) was the last of his five Christmas books, following A Christmas Carol, The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, and The Battle of Life. Like its predecessors, it is not a simple tale of the festive season but a moral study that uses the supernatural to explore human sympathy, memory, and redemption.
