Sinopsis

In "Geronimo's Story of His Life," the renowned Apache leader presents a poignant memoir that intricately weaves personal narrative with a broader historical context. Written primarily in collaboration with the American journalist S.M. Barrett, the book offers a first-person perspective on the struggles, resilience, and cultural identity of the Apache people during a time of immense colonial disruption. The literary style combines oral tradition with written prose, creating a vivid portrayal of Geronimo's life, including his legendary battles, cultural practices, and the poignant loss of his homeland, thereby providing invaluable insight into Native American histories often overlooked in mainstream discourse. Geronimo, born in 1829, emerged as a prominent figure in the Apache Wars against the United States, driven by experiences of personal loss and a deep-seated commitment to his people's way of life. As a leader, his fierce resistance and negotiation skills shaped both his legacy and the historical narrative of indigenous rights. His story reflects not only the militaristic conflicts but also the deep spiritual connection the Apache have with their land, which is essential for understanding the struggles faced by Native Americans during the 19th century. Readers seeking a deeper understanding of Native American history and identity will find Geronimo's memoir an essential read. It transcends typical autobiography, serving as both a historical document and a profound reflection on resistance and survival, inviting readers to engage with the complexities of cultural memory and the ongoing repercussions of colonization.

A quintessential American dream story from a Mexican entrepreneur who shares the tale of building a multi-million-dollar business from scratch, complete with both success and failure, and always a vision of hope.

Leal came to the US penniless as a teenager, speaking almost no English; he literally slept in the boiler room of a Wisconsin cheese factory for months before he was caught. Through hard work, grit, and ingenuity Leal would go on to launch his own business. He is widely credited with introducing Mexican cheeses to the US market and grew his company to a multi-million-dollar success story that defined an industry.

Yet, like many successful entrepreneurs, Leal's great successes were matched by personal failures: the end of a marriage; trouble with law enforcement; and the deeply felt sense that there must be something more to life than great wealth. Leal's memoir, The House that Cheese Built, is both a quintessential immigrant success story—one that beautifully illustrates the immigrant experiences: isolation, fear, and ambition for a better life and assimilation—as well as a thoughtful personal account of entrepreneurship and all its benefits and costs.

Renowned internationally for her lyrically unsettling novels, PEN/Faulkner Award winner Chloe Aridjis now presents her first collection of shorter works, with an introduction by Tom McCarthy

Chloe Aridjis's stories and essays are known to transport readers into liminal, often dreamlike, realms. In this collection of works, we meet a woman guided only by a plastic bag drifting through the streets of Berlin who discovers a nonsense-named bar that is home to papier-mâché monsters and one glass-encased somnambulist. Floating through space, cosmonauts are confronted not only with wonder and astonishment, but tedium and solitude. And in Mexico City, stray dogs animate public spaces, "infusing them with a noble life force." In her pen portraits, Aridjis turns her eye to expats and outsiders, including artists and writers such as Leonora Carrington, Mavis Gallant, and Beatrice Hastings.

Exploring the complexity of exile and urban alienation, Dialogue with a Somnambulist showcases "the rare writer who reinvents herself in each book" (Garth Greenwell) and who is as imaginatively at home in the short form as in her longer fiction.

Francis Marion Crawford, an only child, was born on 2nd August 1854 at Bagni di Lucca, Italy. He was a nephew to Julia Ward Howe, the American poet and writer of ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic’.

Crawford was educated at St Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire and then on to Cambridge University, the University of Heidelberg and the University of Rome.

In 1879 he went to India, to study Sanskrit and then to edit The Indian Herald. In 1881 he returned to America to continue his Sanskrit studies at Harvard University.

His family became increasingly concerned about his employment prospects. After an attempt at a singing career as a baritone was ruled out, he was encouraged to write.

In December 1882 his first novel, ‘Mr Isaacs’, was published and was an immediate hit as was his second novel ‘Dr Claudius’ in 1883.

In October 1884 he married Elizabeth Berdan and encouraged by his excellent start to a literary career they returned to Sant Agnello, Italy to make a permanent home, buying the Villa Renzi that then became Villa Crawford.

In the late 1890s, Crawford began work on his historical works which would later include ‘Corleone’, in 1897, the first major treatment of the Mafia in literature.

Crawford is also exceedingly popular and anthologized as a short story writer of bizarre and creepy tales.

In 1908 came his classic ‘The Screaming Skull’. Without doubt its unsettling nature is heightened as the reader/listener is drawn into to the story by its narrator. Everything is explained and plausible until, of course, it isn’t.

Francis Marion Crawford died at Sorrento on Good Friday 1909 at Villa Crawford of a heart attack.

In this classic supernatural story by F Marion Crawford a man takes a room on a liner and discovers that its previous occupants have all committed suicide. When his room mate on the Upper Berth also disappears the evidence points to some unearthly sequence of happenings.

This is a true story of riches to rags to riches, by one of Britain's most colourful entrepreneurs of the last 50 years. It records 70 years of British social and political history by someone who was there and was nicknamed 'Mr Death' by the media. Its backdrop is the taboo subject of death and the machinations of the funeral industry. It has amazing personal troughs and peaks that are described with the honesty of 'open-heart surgery' by a writer is encouraging you to 'give it a go'. It is pacey, racy, irreverent, tragic, uplifting but also completely true.
Featured song: 'Stiff' performed by Gary O'Brien and Nick Rye of Lucho. Written by Howard Hodgson, Mike O’Sullivan, Gary O’Brien and Nick Rye.
