Sinopse

In "Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins," the reader is presented with a striking collection that showcases Hopkins' innovative use of language and form, characterized by his pioneering rhythm known as "sprung rhythm." With vivid imagery and a passionate connection to the natural world, his poetry often reflects a deep theological inquiry, demonstrating a unique blend of Romantic sensibility and Victorian context. The poems explore themes of nature, faith, and the sublime, launching the reader on an evocative journey through both the physical and spiritual realms as he immerses himself in the beauty of creation and its divine implications. Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) was a Jesuit priest and poet who lived at the intersection of faith and art, profoundly influenced by his religious beliefs and the tumultuous cultural landscape of 19th-century England. His innovative approach to verse was not widely recognized during his lifetime; however, the subsequent posthumous publication of his works has led him to be celebrated as a groundbreaking figure in modern poetry. Hopkins' commitment to his faith and his passion for the natural world come alive in his writing, a product of a life dedicated to both spirituality and artistic exploration. I invite readers to delve into this collection, not only to appreciate Hopkins' mastery of language and form but also to engage with the profound spiritual reflections that resonate within each poem. "Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins" is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the intricate relationship between art and faith, and the enduring power of nature in the poetic imagination.

Literature is a world of words and wonder, able to take us on almost unimaginable journeys from the wild and fantastic to the grind and minutiae of life.

An author’s ideas are his building blocks, his architecture of the mind, building a structure on which all else will rest; the narrative, the characters, the words - those few words that begin the adventure.

In this series we look at some of our leading classic authors across two genres: the short story and the poem. In this modern world there is an insatiable need to categorise and pigeon-hole everyone and everything. But ideas, these grains and saplings of the brain, need to roam, to explore and find their perfect literary use vehicle. Our authors are masters of many literary forms, perhaps known for one but themselves favouring another.

Story. Poems. Story. Within these boundaries come all manner of invention and cast of characters. And, of course, each author has their own way of revealing their own chapter and verse.

Unapologetic, unafraid and unyielding, Alfian’s second collection of verse delves in greater depth the concerns in his first volume and moves into reclaiming our collective history and memory.

In mining our psyche, he casts light where whispers and shadows lurk. He draws inspiration from censored histories, subsumed myths and invokes imagined voices from the exiled, demanding of the reader to witness the ubiquitous ideological fictions that surround us.

This is one of the most dissonant and penetrating voices in Singapore poetry.

George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron, but more commonly known as just Byron was a leading English poet in the Romantic Movement along with Keats and Shelley.
Byron was born on January 22nd, 1788. He was a great traveller across Europe, spending many years in Italy and much time in Greece. With his aristocratic indulgences, flamboyant style along with his debts, and a string of lovers he was the constant talk of society.
In 1823 he joined the Greeks in their war of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, both helping to fund and advise on the war’s conduct.
It was an extraordinary adventure, even by his own standards. But, for us, it is his poetry for which he is mainly remembered even though it is difficult to see where he had time to write his works of immense beauty. But write them he did.
He died on April 19th 1824 after having contracted a cold which, on the advice of his doctors, was treated with blood-letting. This cause complications and a violent fever set in. Byron died like his fellow romantics, tragically young and on some foreign field.

Helen of Bikini examines the way humans inhabit the world, both in beauty and in conflict. How do the twinned human forces of domestication and domination, rage and mediation, witness and culpability, destruction and nurturing, find their balances, not in an either/or, but in a melding? In an unapologetically feminist approach to these topics, Reeves explores the idea that "we are the only ones who name," and goes about teaching us the "alphabet of our unmaking."
"In her finely wrought debut poetry collection, Helen of Bikini, Phoebe Reeves showers us with the hard rain of atomic fallout, juxtaposed with a compendium of flora and fauna, invoked and named with a painstaking commitment to their beautiful existence.”

In Nothing and Everything, Dr. Engin Ozertugrul offers a deeply personal exploration of human existence where paradox and transcendence coexist. Known for Interview with OCD, Ozertugrul uses poetry to unpack the intricate relationship between consciousness, emotion, and divinity. Eschewing structured rhyme, he employs repetition, simplicity, and second-person narration to reveal a universal truth: we are all connected and uncertain, and that is where beauty lies. This collection avoids common poetic tropes like romance or singular religious views, focusing instead on raw human experiences—fear, sadness, anger, and hope. Each poem wrestles with the limits of understanding without succumbing to nihilism, guiding readers toward meditative peace born of acceptance and awareness.Inspired by Transcendental Meditation (TM) and thinkers such as Rumi, Spinoza, Jung, Kant, Emerson, and Blake, the poems reflect spiritual insights reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Ozertugrul credits TM for shaping his understanding of consciousness and personal transformation.“This book is about being human,” he says—embracing challenges, disappointments, fears, anger, and joy. Written with what he calls “a better use of his OCD mind,” the poems use layered repetition to create a spiritual hypnosis.Nothing and Everything will resonate with readers interested in meditation, mindfulness, and nontraditional spirituality, especially those connected to TM and the David Lynch Foundation. Though not self-help, it offers comfort not by providing answers but by giving space to sit with questions.
