Sinopse

In "Crowds," Gerald Stanley Lee delves into the complexities of human behavior and societal dynamics, exploring how large groups influence individual actions, emotions, and beliefs. Written in a reflective and analytical style characteristic of early 20th-century sociological thought, the book interweaves anecdotes, observations, and theoretical insights. Lee scrutinizes the psychological forces at play within collective gatherings, drawing upon his rich understanding of social psychology and the burgeoning field of crowd theory during his time. The text serves as both a chronicle of contemporary societal phenomena and a prescient exploration of the challenges posed by the massification of social behavior. Gerald Stanley Lee was an influential American writer, thinker, and social commentator whose interest in crowd psychology stemmed from the tumultuous events of his age, particularly the effects of World War I and the rise of mass movements. His academic background in literature and philosophy informed his distinctive perspective, enabling him to weave insightful observations about public sentiment and individual identity within the fabric of society. Lee's interdisciplinary approach makes "Crowds" a vital contribution to the fields of sociology and psychology alike. This thought-provoking book invites readers to reconsider the nature of collective existence, making it an essential read for those interested in psychology, sociology, and the human experience as a whole. Lee's keen insights are as relevant today as they were when first published, offering clarity into the complexities of contemporary social dynamics. It serves not only as a historical account but also as a guide for understanding current societal trends.

The Airborne Mafia explores how a small group of World War II airborne officers took control of the US Army after World War II. This powerful cadre cemented a unique airborne culture that had an unprecedented impact on the Cold War US Army and beyond.

Robert F. Williams reveals the trials and tribulations this group of officers faced in order to bring about their vision. He spotlights the relationship between organizational culture, operational behavior, and institutional change in the United States Army during the Cold War, showing that as airborne officers ascended to the highest ranks of the army they transmitted their culture throughout their service in four major ways—civil-military relations, preparation for potential atomic combat, helicopter airmobility, and strategic response forces.

Experiences of training and commanding airborne divisions in World War II led these men to hold sway in army doctrine by the mid-1950s. Dominating institutional thought and imparting their values, beliefs, and norms throughout the service they enjoyed a special privilege within the group culture. Williams demonstrates this impact, privilege, and power by focusing on the paratrooper triumvirate of Matthew Ridgway, Maxwell Taylor, and James Gavin and the lasting impression they made on how the US Army fought.

In Unit 1 you will hear Dutch decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Dutch speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Dutch. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Dutch at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Dutch, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.

"The entire cowboy-outlaw era, which reached its climax in 1897 and ended around 1905, comes vividly alive in this kaleidoscopic work ... countless other instances of robbing, stealing and retribution, are woven splendidly into this rousing saga of the closing years of the outlaw epoch of the American West." —Wall Street JournalFrom multiple New York Times bestselling author Tom Clavin comes the thrilling true story of the most infamous hangout for bandits, thieves and murderers of all time—and the lawmen tasked with rooting them out.Robbers Roost, Brown’s Hole, and Hole-in-the-Wall were three hideouts that collectively were known to outlaws as “Bandit Heaven.” During the 1880s and ‘90s these remote locations in Wyoming and Utah harbored hundreds of train and bank robbers, horse and cattle thieves, the occasional killer, and anyone else with a price on his head.Clavin's Bandit Heaven is the entertaining story of these tumultuous times and the colorful characters who rode the Outlaw Trail through the frigid mountain passes and throat-parching deserts that connected the three hideouts—well-guarded enclaves no sensible lawman would enter. There are the “star” residents like gregarious Butch Cassidy and his mostly silent sidekick the Sundance Kid, and an array of fascinating supporting players like the cold-blooded Kid Curry, and “Black Jack” Ketchum (who had the dubious distinction of being decapitated during a hanging), among others. Most of the hard-riding action takes place in the mid- to late-1890s when Bandit Heaven came to be one of the few safe places left as the law closed in on the dwindling number of active outlaws. Most were dead by the beginning of the 20th century, gunned down by a galvanized law-enforcement system seeking rewards and glory. Ultimately, only Cassidy and Sundance escaped . . . to meet their fate 6000 miles away, becoming legends when they died in a fusillade of lead.Bandit Heaven is a thrilling listen, filled with action, indelible characters, and some poignance for the true end of the Wild West outlaw.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

'This is a South African story of an unsung hero, a man forgotten by history – though not by me, nor by the people who knew and respected him …'
When his grandfather gave sermons, he was 'capable of shaking mountains', a church leader tells journalist and author Lesley Mofokeng. 'Ntate Mofokeng pulled people towards God with the great and rare talent of a motivator.'
In this revealing book, Mofokeng investigates the life of his grandfather, Mongangane Wilfred Mofokeng, a prominent Dutch Reformed Church evangelist. In the 1950s, as Black South Africans were being evicted from the cities to live in reserves and homelands, Mongangane set out to build a community at a dusty cattle post in the far North West province. There he managed to establish a resilient community that mostly lived outside the repressions of the apartheid regime. The journey takes the author from Johannesburg's Marabi-soaked townships of the 1930s to his childhood home of Gelukspan near Lichtenburg and then to rural Free State and the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. In what becomes a spiritual quest, he traces the inspirational footsteps of his ancestors and the legendary King Moshoeshoe.
Mofokeng also explores the politics and history of the Dutch Reformed Church's Black constituency and uncovers why to this day it is called Kereke ya Fora – or 'Church of the French' – and its hymns are sung across denominations and in social spaces outside the church.
