Sinopsis

In "What the White Race May Learn from the Indian," George Wharton James presents a thought-provoking examination of the values, practices, and philosophies of Native American cultures, proposing insightful lessons for Western society. Through a combination of personal reflections, historical analysis, and anecdotal evidence, James invites readers to explore themes of sustainability, community living, and spirituality that characterize Indigenous cultures. His literary style is marked by rich descriptions and a clear sense of empathy, transcending mere observation to foster a deeper understanding of the historical and social context in which these cultures exist, thereby challenging the prevailing attitudes of his time. George Wharton James, an early 20th-century author, lecturer, and advocate for Indigenous rights, was deeply influenced by his experiences in the American Southwest. His profound admiration for Native American traditions stemmed from his desire to highlight their significance in a rapidly changing world. As a pioneer in cultural preservation, James aimed to bridge the gap between diverse cultures, often highlighting the wisdom in Indigenous knowledge systems that could inform modern practices. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in the intersections of culture, philosophy, and social justice. James's eloquent narrative will inspire those seeking to broaden their understanding of Indigenous perspectives and recognize the potential for mutual learning and respect between cultures.

Is the destruction of Gaza only a consequence of the October 7, 2023 attack, or is it also the outcome of a long process of dispossession and eradication? Do Palestinians have the right to resist the occupation? Is talking about genocide anti-Semitism? Enzo Traverso goes to the root of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict by calling history into question and offers a critical interpretation that overturns the one-sided perspective from which we have become accustomed to observing what is happening in Gaza.

Israel is usually described as a democratic island in the middle of an obscurantist ocean, and Hamas as a movement inspired by bloodthirsty fanaticism. The destruction of Gaza is reminiscent of the golden age of colonialism, when the West perpetrated genocides in Asia and Africa in the name of its civilizing mission. But if a genocidal war is unleashed in the name of fighting anti-Semitism, it is our own ethical values and political norms that are tarnished: the assumptions of our moral conscience risk being turned upside down. The October 7 attack was terrifying, but it must be analyzed and not just condemned. And we must do so by summoning all the critical tools of historical research. In that case, neither American weapons nor Western media, nor the distorted and outraged memory of the Holocaust will be able to redeem it.

Writing and sharing fiction allows adolescents to glimpse other lives

The current curricular emphasis on analytical writing can make it feel risky to teach creative writing in ELA classrooms. But the opportunity to write fiction in school opens many doors for young people: doors the author argues are critical to the development of our students, our education system, and even our democracy.

This book will delight English teachers weary of focusing relentlessly on argument and information writing. Veteran teacher Ariel Sacks vividly describes the many academic, social–emotional, and community-building advantages of teaching imaginative writing in the classroom, not least of which is the impact it has on equity for marginalized students. Her book is a teacher-to-teacher text that folds in detailed, practical guidance about how to design lessons and meet standards, while presenting a powerful central argument: that the writing of fiction should be treated not as a luxury for some, but as a center of the English curriculum for all students.

Personality disorders are complex mental health conditions that affect the way individuals think, feel, and behave, often leading to difficulties in relationships, work, and daily life. Unlike temporary mood swings or behavioral patterns influenced by stress, personality disorders are deeply ingrained and persistent, typically emerging in adolescence or early adulthood. These disorders shape a person’s worldview, emotional responses, and interactions with others, often resulting in distress for both the individual and those around them.
Personality is a unique combination of traits that influence how a person perceives and responds to the world. In individuals with personality disorders, these traits become rigid and maladaptive, making it difficult to function in a socially acceptable or emotionally stable way. The severity of symptoms can vary, but in many cases, individuals struggle with emotional regulation, self-image, and interpersonal relationships. Some may withdraw from social interactions due to deep-seated mistrust, while others may exhibit erratic or impulsive behaviors that create conflict.
Personality disorders are categorized into three clusters based on shared characteristics. Cluster A includes disorders that involve odd or eccentric thinking and behavior, such as paranoid and schizotypal personality disorders. Cluster B consists of dramatic, emotional, and erratic conditions, including borderline and narcissistic personality disorders. Cluster C encompasses anxious and fearful disorders, such as avoidant and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders. While these clusters help in understanding the broad patterns of personality disorders, individual experiences can differ significantly.

Formed in 1965, Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band based in San Francisco, California, that became one of the pioneering bands of psychedelic rock. Their 1967 break-out album Surrealistic Pillow includes two songs, "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit", that are among Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". The October 1966 to February 1970 lineup of Jefferson Airplane, consisting of Marty Balin (vocals), Paul Kantner (guitar, vocals), Grace Slick (vocals), Jorma Kaukonen (lead guitar, vocals), Jack Casady (bass), and Spencer Dryden (drums), was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. The Moody Blues were an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1964. During the band's "classic era" into the early 1970s, the lineup included keyboardist Mike Pinder, multi-instrumentalist Ray Thomas, drummer Graeme Edge, guitarist Justin Hayward, and bassist John Lodge. Their second album, Days of Future Passed, which was released in 1967, was a fusion of rock with classical music which established the band as pioneers in the development of art rock and progressive rock. The band has sold 70 million albums worldwide, which includes 18 platinum and gold LPs. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. This fascinating audio program includes actual radio commercials from the 1960s for each of the bands.
