Sinopsis

In "The Old Franciscan Missions Of California," George Wharton James transports readers to the spiritual and cultural landscape of 18th and 19th century California. This meticulously researched work is characterized by James's lyrical prose, which elegantly intertwines historical narratives with vivid descriptions. He delves into the architectural grandeur, ritual practices, and socio-political contexts of the Franciscan missions, establishing them as both religious sanctuaries and centers of community life. His narrative style reflects a nuanced understanding of the era's complexities, making this book a significant contribution to American historical literature and the study of colonialism in the West. George Wharton James (1858-1923) was a passionate advocate for the preservation of California's natural and cultural heritage. As a prominent writer and lecturer, his extensive travels throughout the American West deeply informed his perspective on the missions. His commitment to education and historical preservation stemmed from his encounters with the remnants of California's colonial past, which he sought to illuminate and celebrate through this fervent exploration. This book is highly recommended for historians, scholars, and enthusiasts of California's rich heritage. James's compelling narrative invites readers to appreciate the missions not only as historical sites but as vibrant witnesses to the cultural confluence that shaped the region. Engaging with this text will deepen one's understanding of California's identity and the enduring legacy of the Franciscan missions.

Americans are more familiar with his signature than with the man himself. In this spirited account of John Hancock's life, Brooke Barbier depicts a patriot of fascinating contradictions—a child of enormous privilege who would nevertheless become a voice of the common folk; a pillar of society uncomfortable with radicalism who yet was crucial to independence.

Orphaned young, Hancock was raised by his merchant uncle, whose business and vast wealth he inherited—including household slaves, whom Hancock later freed. By his early thirties, he was one of New England's most prominent politicians, earning a place on Britain's most-wanted list and the derisive nickname King Hancock. While he eventually joined the revolution against England, his ever moderate—and moderating—disposition would prove an asset after 1776. Barbier shows Hancock appealing to southerners and northerners, Federalists and Anti-Federalists. He was a famously steadying force as president of the fractious Second Continental Congress. As governor of Massachusetts, Hancock convinced its delegates to vote for the federal Constitution and calmed the fallout from the shocking Shays's Rebellion. An insightful study of leadership in the revolutionary era, King Hancock traces a moment when passion was on the side of compromise and accommodation proved the basis of profound social and political change.

This is a collection of what I feel are some of the most important social/cognitive psychology experiments, studies, demonstrations, biases, and systematic reviews, presented in an entertaining way while adhering to academic standards.

I have always been fascinated by how our behaviors, cognition (thoughts), and affect (how we feel) are greatly dependent upon our social environment and our imperfect brains. I find it fascinating--perhaps because I am an American who was raised in the typical American cultural environment where I learned that what we consider "the self" consists of some magic "soul" that defines who we are—our behaviors (including choices and decisions), our cognition (including thoughts and beliefs), and our feelings. This could not be further from the truth. "We" are a result of an often incomprehensible interaction between biology and environment where some traits are more greatly influenced by social factors than others. Who we are is a result of social forces—the influence of other people and the human-created systems in which we operate. We can ignore this fact, maintain an illusion of control, or face reality and learn how to navigate this world and come out on top—personally, professionally, and financially. I choose the latter.

My name is Bo Bennett, and I hold a PhD in social psychology with a passion for this subject. While this book is not about me, my interpretations and commentary do make up most of the sections of each entry based on the content written by the original authors of the research or other sources—each of which will be cited when used.
    Enjoy this short book!
