Sinossi

In "Persian Empire," George Rawlinson presents a meticulously detailed exploration of one of history's most influential civilizations. The book deftly intertwines narrative and analysis, employing a scholarly style that is both accessible and engaging. Rawlinson's work is anchored in the context of the 19th century, a period marked by a growing Western interest in Eastern cultures and a revival of classical studies, making his narrative rich with both historical insights and contemporary reflections. The extensive use of primary sources, including inscriptions and ancient texts, lends a robust authenticity to his portrayal of the Empire's vast expanse and cultural complexities. George Rawlinson, a noted historian and linguist, was heavily influenced by his experiences studying ancient languages and cultures. His position as a key figure in the translation of the cuneiform inscriptions allowed him unique access to the primary materials that inform this work. Rawlinson's academic rigor, paired with his passion for the subject, drove him to illuminate the Persian Empire's contributions to governance, art, and society, often overlooked in Western narratives. "Persian Empire" is a must-read for scholars, students, and general readers alike, offering profound insights into the dynamics of power, culture, and legacy in ancient Persia. This book not only enriches our understanding of historical empires but also invites readers to consider the lessons they impart for contemporary society.

"The Analysis of Mind" is a book written by the British philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell, first published in 1921. The book is a comprehensive exploration of the nature of the human mind and its various functions, and is considered one of Russell's most important and influential works.
In "The Analysis of Mind", Russell argues that the mind is not a single, unified entity, but rather a collection of distinct mental processes, such as perception, memory, imagination, and reasoning. He examines these processes in detail, exploring their underlying structures, functions, and relationships to one another.
Russell also discusses the relationship between mind and body, arguing against the traditional dualistic view that sees the mind and body as separate and distinct entities. He proposes a more holistic approach, in which mental and physical events are seen as part of a single, integrated system.
Throughout "The Analysis of Mind", Russell draws on a wide range of sources, including philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, and his writing is characterized by clarity and rigor. The book continues to be widely read and studied today, and remains an important contribution to the fields of philosophy and psychology.

Renowned internationally for her lyrically unsettling novels, PEN/Faulkner Award winner Chloe Aridjis now presents her first collection of shorter works, with an introduction by Tom McCarthy

Chloe Aridjis's stories and essays are known to transport readers into liminal, often dreamlike, realms. In this collection of works, we meet a woman guided only by a plastic bag drifting through the streets of Berlin who discovers a nonsense-named bar that is home to papier-mâché monsters and one glass-encased somnambulist. Floating through space, cosmonauts are confronted not only with wonder and astonishment, but tedium and solitude. And in Mexico City, stray dogs animate public spaces, "infusing them with a noble life force." In her pen portraits, Aridjis turns her eye to expats and outsiders, including artists and writers such as Leonora Carrington, Mavis Gallant, and Beatrice Hastings.

Exploring the complexity of exile and urban alienation, Dialogue with a Somnambulist showcases "the rare writer who reinvents herself in each book" (Garth Greenwell) and who is as imaginatively at home in the short form as in her longer fiction.

  • Tyre & Carthage: The History of the Phoenician Cities that Dominated the Mediterranean for Centuries - cover

Across the eastern Mediterranean there has been discovered a great number of objects whose appearance or materials are extraneous to local cultures, whether it was an Egyptian amulet in Greece, a Greek vase in Africa, or thousands of strange amulets in Gibraltar. The remains are evidence that a huge amount of goods was once moved from one land to another, systematically transported and traded across the Mediterranean by the ancient commercial network of the Phoenicians. Beginning in the 13th century BCE, and lasting for more than a millennium, this civilization dominated the most important body of water known to the ancients. With their formidable ships and skills in trading, they made a name for themselves by trading between Egypt, Greece, Rome, Carthage, Sardinia, Spain, and eventually all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, establishing themselves as the undisputed lords of the sea.
One of the most crucial cities in the system was hidden beneath the Greek, Roman, and Crusader ruins of Lebanon: the ancient city of Tyre. "Seated at entrance to the sea," according to the prophet Ezekiel, Tyre was constructed on a purportedly impenetrable island. Tyre was considered to be one of the oldest and wealthiest metropolises of the world, and indeed, the city can be directly associated with some of the most important stages in the history of mankind.
Although Carthage by far preferred to exert economic pressure and influence before resorting to direct military power (and even went so far as to rely primarily on mercenary armies paid with its vast wealth for much of its history, it nonetheless produced a number of outstanding generals, from the likes of Hanno Magnus to, of course, the great bogeyman of Roman nightmares himself: Hannibal. Carthage was able to go from a minor Phoenician settlement to one of the most powerful trading empires of antiquity.

The first full review of the mass murder by crew members on the slave ship Zong and the lasting repercussions of this horrifying event

On November 29, 1781, Captain Collingwood of the British ship Zong commanded his crew to throw overboard one-third of his cargo: a shipment of Africans bound for slavery in America. The captain believed his ship was off course, and he feared there was not enough drinking water to last until landfall. This book is the first to examine in detail the deplorable killings on the Zong, the lawsuit that ensued, how the murder of 132 slaves affected debates about slavery, and the way we remember the infamous Zong today.

Historian James Walvin explores all aspects of the Zong's voyage and the subsequent trial—a case brought to court not for the murder of the slaves but as a suit against the insurers who denied the owners' claim that their "cargo" had been necessarily jettisoned. The scandalous case prompted wide debate and fueled Britain's awakening abolition movement. Without the episode of the Zong, Walvin contends, the process of ending the slave trade would have taken an entirely different moral and political trajectory. He concludes with a fascinating discussion of how the case of the Zong, though unique in the history of slave ships, has come to be understood as typical of life on all such ships.
