Synopsis

In "History of the Sasanian Empire," George Rawlinson meticulously chronicles one of the most significant yet often overlooked periods in ancient history. His work is characterized by a rigorous examination of archaeological findings, ancient texts, and contemporary scholarship, presented in a lucid and engaging narrative style. Rawlinson places the Sasanian Empire within the broader context of Persian history, emphasizing its cultural, political, and economic dynamics from its rise in the 3rd century CE to its decline in the 7th century. The book also explores the empire's interactions with neighboring powers, including Rome and Byzantium, showcasing the Sasanian Empire's influence on the subsequent development of Islamic civilization. George Rawlinson, a renowned 19th-century historian and scholar, was deeply influenced by the burgeoning interest in oriental studies and the deciphering of ancient inscriptions. His expertise in Assyriology and familiarity with the complexities of Persian history informed his comprehensive narrative on the Sasanian Empire. Rawlinson's commitment to shedding light on this pivotal era reflects his broader aim of fostering a deeper understanding of ancient civilizations' impact on modern society. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in ancient history, particularly the intricate tapestry of Persian cultural and political life. An often overlooked, yet very important, environmental process in world history is known as the “Late Antique Little Ice Age,” which took place during the 6th century A.D. across most of the Northern Hemisphere and received its name because it was shorter and less well-known than the Little Ice Age, which took place from the 16th-19th centuries. An examination of the written sources from the 6th century, along with archaeological and climatological information, reveals that the Late Antique Little Ice Age was a major event in world history that had long-lasting repercussions on numerous societies. Although it was not as long or as severe as the later Little Ice Age, the Late Antique Little Ice Age drastically impacted several advanced societies across the Northern Hemisphere, including in Europe, Central Asia, East Asia, and even North America. Perhaps the best-studied aspect of the Late Antique Little Ice Age is the role it played in the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and how it helped shape the composition of early medieval Europe. Some of these studies suggest that the Late Antique Little Ice Age played a major, if not the most important, role in the reformation of Western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. Other studies suggest that the Late Antique Little Ice Age affected the political structure of late ancient societies in the Middle East and Arabia, helping to give rise to Islam. And finally, although the Late Antique Little Ice Age’s effects on East Asia and North America have not been studied nearly as much as its influence on Europe, the archaeological and some textual evidence – in the case of East Asia – suggest that the Late Antique Little Ice Age also affected how complex societies transitioned in those regions during the 6th century and later.

Bridging Our Political Divide: How Liberals and Conservatives Can Understand Each Other and Find Common Ground is an essential contribution to a better national conversation.

Psychologist Kenneth Barish explains the sources and consistency of our political beliefs and why we continue to disagree about fundamental issues in American life. He offers antidotes to the angry, repetitive, and unproductive arguments that now dominate our political culture. Barish teaches us how to listen, think, and speak about our political opinions in a way that allows us to understand each other's concerns, resist false dichotomies and ideological certainty, see new perspectives and possibilities, and find common ground. The concluding chapter shows how we can move beyond partisan divisions toward pragmatic solutions and a better future for America's children.

This fundamentally hopeful book is an essential listen for students in all areas of study, for professionals in the fields of conflict resolution, communication, political science, and social psychology, and for anyone seeking to improve the quality of their conversations with people who may disagree with them, in both politics and in their personal relationships.
