Sinopsis

George Rawlinson's "History of the Persian Empire (Illustrated Edition)" is a meticulous exploration of Persia's vast history, weaving together intricate narratives from the Achaemenid period to the Sassanian dynasty. Rawlinson's literary style is marked by clarity and scholarly rigor, making complex historical events accessible to a wide audience. His use of illustrations enriches the text, providing visual context to the grandeur of Persian architecture, artifacts, and the cultural tapestry that defined the empire. Furthermore, Rawlinson's work is situated within the broader 19th-century scholarly revival of interest in ancient civilizations, reflecting the burgeoning Western curiosity about Eastern history and cultures during the Victorian era. A distinguished British scholar, George Rawlinson was a contemporary of prominent historians and an expert in ancient languages, including Persian and Assyrian. His extensive training in classical literature and history, combined with his work as a diplomat in Persia, fostered a deep understanding of the cultural and political intricacies of the region. This firsthand experience profoundly influenced his scholarship and perspective on the Persian Empire, allowing him to offer readers an authentic lens through which to view this ancient civilization. This illustrated edition not only appeals to historians and students of the ancient world but also captivates general readers intrigued by the richness of Persian culture. Rawlinson's engaging narrative invites readers to journey through the political complexities, cultural achievements, and historical significance of one of history's greatest empires, demonstrating that the legacy of Persia continues to resonate in contemporary discussions of civilization and power.

Side Affects - On Being Trans...

Some days—or weeks, or months, or even years—being trans feels bad. Yet as Hil Malatino points out, there is little space for trans people to think through, let alone speak of, these bad feelings. Negative emotions are suspect because they unsettle narratives of acceptance or reinforce virulently phobic framings of trans as inauthentic and threatening.

In Side Affects, Malatino opens a new conversation about trans experience that acknowledges the reality of feeling fatigue, envy, burnout, numbness, and rage amid the ongoing onslaught of casual and structural transphobia in order to map the intricate emotional terrain of trans survival. Trans structures of feeling are frequently coded as negative on both sides of transition. Before transition, narratives are framed in terms of childhood trauma and being in the "wrong body." Post transition, trans individuals—especially trans people of color—are subject to unrelenting transantagonism.

By moving these unloved feelings to the center of trans experience, Side Affects proposes an affective trans commons that exists outside political debates about inclusion. Acknowledging such powerful and elided feelings as anger and exhaustion, Malatino contends, is critical to motivating justice-oriented advocacy and organizing—and recalibrating new possibilities for survival and well-being.

When the Nazis invaded, they did not intend to govern fairly. Instead they stripped defeated nations of their treasures, industry and natural resources, with the aim of asserting German supremacy and imposing Hitler's New Order in Europe.

Paul Roland tells the story of daily life under Nazi rule - in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Guernsey and the Channel Islands- to be brought to heel by bribery and brutality, rape and torture, inducement and intimidation as the Germans carried out their vile policies.

We hear of quislings and collaborators who conspired with their captors, the 'enemies of the Reich' including Jewish citizens who were rounded up and exterminated, as well as stories of incredible courage by individuals who struck back against the Führer.

In the final phase of the Vietnam War, North Vietnam’s military strategy shifted into high gear. Following the 1973 Paris Peace Accords, which led to the withdrawal of U.S. troops, the North Vietnamese leadership viewed the South as vulnerable and unprotected. They seized this opportunity to begin a calculated and aggressive push toward Saigon. With the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) leading the offensive, key cities and regions across South Vietnam began to fall in rapid succession. Unlike earlier phases of the war, which were marked by a slow grind of guerrilla warfare and jungle battles, this stage saw well-coordinated, large-scale military campaigns. The North's confidence was bolstered by the perception that American military support would not return in a meaningful way.
This advance was not just a military endeavor—it was psychological. Each victory in the North’s campaign chipped away at the morale of South Vietnamese forces. Soldiers deserted in droves, supplies were stretched thin, and leadership at the local and national levels began to falter under pressure. In places like Ban Me Thuot and Pleiku, the speed of the North's takeover stunned both local populations and the South Vietnamese military, who had grown reliant on U.S. support during prior conflicts. Fear and confusion spread among civilians, many of whom began fleeing their homes in anticipation of the advancing northern troops.
The North Vietnamese did not rely on brute force alone. They combined strategic military planning with psychological operations to deepen the sense of inevitable defeat among South Vietnamese soldiers and citizens. Leaflets and radio broadcasts promised fair treatment to those who surrendered and warned of dire consequences for those who resisted. The result was an erosion of will more powerful than any bombing campaign. Defenses crumbled not only because of lack of resources, but because of fear and fatigue.

Join Karen Walrond, author of The Lightmaker's Manifesto, in this intriguing investigation into how we can reclaim aging, cultivate joy, and resist ageism.

During her own year of transition—a milestone birthday, a wedding anniversary, the emptying of the nest—Walrond, in the buoyant and luminous style her readers have come to love, does a deep dive into dimensions of getting older, including health, beauty, spirituality, connection, adventure, and meaning and purpose. Through conversations with social workers and neurologists, activists and clergy, Walrond satisfies her curiosity about why the dominant culture treats aging as a time of dwindling capacity. She also embarks on a series of experiments that help her rebel against convention: letting her hair go naturally gray, going on a silent retreat, revamping her health practices, and plotting her next adventure.

Internalized ageism is not our only option; we can write a different story of aging than the one we've been handed. With wisdom from luminaries who light our way, Walrond helps us radiantly rebel against the fads and assumptions that hold us back, redefine the adventure of getting older, and create a shining future of expanded potential. We might even raise a little hell while we're at it!
