Sherlock Holmes - The Novels includes the 4 full-length novels featuring Sherlock Holmes.
Sherlock Holmes is a fictional private detective created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Referring to himself as a "consulting detective" in the stories, Holmes is known for his proficiency with observation, forensic science, and logical reasoning that borders on the fantastic, which he employs when investigating cases for a wide variety of clients, including Scotland Yard. First appearing in print in 1887's A Study in Scarlet, the character's popularity became widespread with the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine, beginning with A Scandal in Bohemia in 1891; additional tales appeared from then until 1927, eventually totalling four novels and 56 short stories. All but one are set in the Victorian or Edwardian eras, between about 1880 and 1914. Most are narrated by the character of Holmes's friend and biographer Dr. Watson, who usually accompanies Holmes during his investigations and often shares quarters with him at the address of 221B Baker Street, London, where many of the stories begin.
    Included in this collection:
    1. A Study in Scarlet (1887)
    2. The Sign of the Four (1890)
    3. The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902)
    4. The Valley of Fear (1915)

Left impoverished upon the death of her aunt, Emma Watson has no option but to be reunited with her estranged father and siblings. Initially delighted with her new life—including the fashionable society balls to which she now has access—Emma soon realizes that her family harbors many ill feelings, not least those springing from the sisters' hopes—and disappointments—in snaring a husband. So when the eligible and suitably rich Tom Musgrove begins to transfer his affections from her sister Margaret to Emma, the result can only be further sibling rivalry and unrest. A delightful, exquisitely drawn portrait of family life, The Watsons is Jane Austen at her storytelling best. Author of the masterpieces Pride and Prejudice and Emma, Jane Austen (1775–1817) is one of the most beloved novelists of all time.

'Things are sweeter when they're lost. I know – because once I wanted something and got it. It was the only thing I ever wanted badly, Dot, and when I got it, it turned to dust in my hand.'

One of F. Scott Fitzgerald's earlier novels, The Beautiful and the Damned was first published in 1922 to much commercial success. Modelled on the early years of Fitzgerald's own marriage to Zelda Fitzgerald, the reader is given an acute insight into the ups and downs of a mismatched love affair.

Anthony Patch, a young yet unambitious graduate from Harvard University, moves to New York and soon meets fellow socialite and flapper, Gloria Gilbert. Infatuated by her beauty, Anthony soon proposes to Gloria, and the pair embark on a doomed whirlwind romance. Their marriage is combative and tense; Anthony expects Gloria to be more domesticated while Gloria expects Anthony to fund her extravagant lifestyle. They both commit to ignoring their issues, attending glamorous social events and drinking in excess. But, of course, this arrangement can only last so long…
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896 – 1940) was an American essayist and novelist. Renowned for his colourful and lively depictions of the 1920s and 1930s Jazz Age, his works were also deeply concerned with love, class and materialism. He published four novels and over one hundred short stories in his lifetime.

“Crimes possess all the basic factors of a work of art—approach, conception, technique, imagination, attack, method, and organization.”
The Benson Murder Case introduces S. S. Van Dine’s brilliant and iconic detective to the world in one of the most popular detective novels of the twentieth century, inspired by the real-life murder of a famous bridge player.
Alvin Benson is found slumped over an easy chair in a room locked from the inside with a bullet in his head, and Wall Street and the high society of Manhattan are set ablaze with the news of the playboy stockbroker’s death. But when NYPD’s top detectives and ballistics experts can’t solve the mystery, it falls to Philo Vance, an art connoisseur and amateur sleuth, to find the killer. Vance’s intellectual and artistic background helps him uncover a series of odd clues, starting with a missing toupee and false teeth, and soon he is delving deep into the case. In a Holmesian display of deduction, Vance also uses a recreation of the crime scene to determine several details about the killer—even down to their height. But he will have to uncover more than these small but vital details in order to find the real killer, deconstruct their alibi, and prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they in fact killed Alvin Benson.
