Sinopse

In "Bunyip Land," George Manville Fenn transports readers to the wilds of Australia, creating an engaging tale that skillfully intertwines adventure, local lore, and rich descriptions of the natural landscape. The narrative follows young David, a spirited protagonist navigating the mysteries of the bush, particularly the legendary Bunyip, a creature borne of indigenous mythology. Through Fenn's vivid prose and his utilization of detailed illustrations, the book embraces a unique literary style that merges realism with the fantastical, reflecting the Victorian fascination with exploration and the exotic, as well as a burgeoning interest in Australian culture. George Manville Fenn, born in England in 1831, was a prolific author, journalist, and illustrator whose works primarily targeted young readers. His experiences travelling and observing diverse cultures undoubtedly shaped his storytelling. Fenn's own lifelong curiosity about nature and indigenous traditions fueled his desire to create stories that not only entertain but also educate, encapsulating the essence of the places he wrote about. "Bunyip Land" is highly recommended for readers seeking an adventurous escape into Australia's enchanting wilderness. Perfect for those interested in historical fiction, folklore, and the intersection of cultures, this work captures the imagination while encouraging readers to explore the depths of their own curiosity.

Who will help the tailor of Gloucester to finish the Mayor’s elegant coat? For the tailor has fallen ill, and the Mayor is to be married in it tomorrow – on Christmas Day in the morning?

Written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter in 1901, this story was written as a Christmas gift to ten-year-old Freda Moore, the daughter of her former governess. Potter based the story on a real-world incident involving John Prichard, a Gloucester tailor who had a commission to make a new suit for the new mayor. But it’s Potter’s charming touch of adding impish, mischievous animals to move the story along that make this children’s classic.

But one day, Shibu realizes that all the other cats are keeping their feelings (and their tails) tucked away. Maybe it would be better to try and fit in? From two extraordinary debuts comes a delightful story on navigating life's highs, lows, and all the big emotions in between.

"Thomas’ cogent text and her focus on emotional intelligence will resonate with caregivers."—Kirkus (starred)

Final Victim by Ray Bradbury and Henry Hasse - Hunting a criminal is tough enough, but it's even tougher when it's on a bit of Hell's own rock in the void of space!
The space-suited figure scrambled frantically over the edge of the ragged asteroid cliff, and lay panting from the exertion of the long climb upward. The pale face beneath the helmet was drawn in a tight grimace as it stared at the tiny Patrol ship on the plain below. No access to it now! He was trapped.
The young man rose to his feet, stared down the steep ravine he had just traversed. He saw the plodding figure of the Patrolman coming up toward him. There was a frightening relentlessness about that figure. He caught a dull glint of metal and knew the Patrolman had drawn his atom-blast.
“If only I hadn’t lost my gun, down there!” And then he laughed bitterly, for he knew he never would have used it. He stepped out in plain sight, threw his hands up in the universal gesture of surrender. His mind was awry with bitter thoughts. He had never killed anyone in all his life! But the Patrol thought he had, and that’s what counted now. He was glad it was all over. He would surrender, go back and face trial though the evidence was all against him.
Now the Patrolman’s bulging, space-suited figure loomed up before him just ten yards away. He raised his hands still higher to make sure the other saw them.

The Artificial Man by Clare Winger Harris - Before David’s startled gaze the newcomer placed his right hand to his left shoulder and removed the left arm. He then proceeded to dismember himself until only a torso, head and one arm remained.
On the annals of surgery no case has ever left quite as horrible an impression upon the public as did that of George Gregory, a student of Austin College. Young Gregory was equally proficient in scholastic and athletic work, having been for two years captain of the football team, and for one year a marked success in intercollegiate debates. No student of the senior class of Austin or Decker will ever forget his masterful arguments as he upheld the affirmative in the question:—“Resolved that bodily perfection is a result of right thinking.” Gregory gave every promise of being one of the masterful minds of the age; and if masterful in this instance means dominating, he was that—and more. Alas that his brilliant mentality was destined to degradation through the physical body—but that is my story.
It was the Thanksgiving game that proved the beginning of George’s downfall. Warned by friends that he would be wise to desist from the more dangerous physical sports, he laughingly—though with unquestionable sincerity—referred to the context of his famous debate, declaring that a correct mental attitude toward life—he had this point down to a mathematical correctness—rendered physical disasters impossible. His sincerity in believing this was laudable, and so far his credence had stood him in good stead. No one who saw his well-proportioned six-foot figure making its way through the opponents’ lines, could doubt that the science of thinking rightly was favorably exemplified in young Gregory.
