Sinopsis

The nineteenth-century Scottish author gives readers a fictionalized self portrait of his youth—plus recollections of him by his son in From a Northern Window. MacDonald’s final “novella” of a scant 22,000 words was viewed as so insignificant at the time of its release in 1898 that it never appeared in book form in the U.K and is omitted from many lists of MacDonald’s books. Though appearing in magazine form in Britain, its only book edition was published in the United States. For those with eyes to see, however, it reads as an autobiographical retrospective of the beginning of MacDonald’s own writing life. Though revealing a poignant final glimpse of MacDonald’s waning energy and craft, the significance of its portrait of a struggling youthful author is delightful. Shortly after its writing, what appeared to be a stroke silenced the pen of this remarkable literary genius and man of God. Included in this new edition of Far Above Rubies is Ronald MacDonald’s memorable portrait of his father from 1910, From a Northern Window.

Not Without Laughter is drawn in part from the author's own recollections of youth and early manhood. This stirring coming-of-age tale unfolds in 1930s rural Kansas. A poignant portrait of African-American family life in the early twentieth century, it follows the story of young Sandy Rogers as he grows from a boy to a man. We meet Sandy's mother, Annjee, who works as a housekeeper for a wealthy white family; his strong-willed grandmother, Hager; Jimboy, Sandy's father, who travels the country looking for work; Aunt Tempy, the social climber; and Aunt Harriet, the blues singer who has turned away from her faith.A fascinating chronicle of a family's joys and hardships, Not Without Laughter is a vivid exploration of growing up and growing strong in a racially divided society. A rich and important work, it masterfully echoes the black American experience.

The White PeacockBy D. H. LawrenceNarrated by Patrick BarkerLawrence’s first novel tells the tale of a love triangle between Lettie Beardsall and her neighbours, George Saxton, son of a farmer, and Leslie Tempest, the local mine owners’ son. Lettie will marry Leslie, but remain sexually attracted George. George also marries but falls victim to alcohol. Inspired by Maurice Greiffenhagen’s painting ‘An Idyll’, ‘The White Peacock’ is both a romance and a novel about class and the industrialisation of the English countryside that draws on Lawrence’s youth. Though it bears traces of his apprenticeship as a novelist, ‘The White Peacock’ is a mature work that anticipates the psychological themes of ‘Sons and Lovers’ and the gamekeeper character of ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’.
