Sinopsis

In "The Exhibition Drama," George M. Baker expertly navigates the vibrant interplay between art and performance, presenting an incisive exploration of the theatrical forms that emerged during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Employing a blend of critical analysis and vivid examples, Baker scrutinizes how exhibitions influenced dramatic narratives, shaping both structure and content in stagecraft. His literary style is characterized by a meticulous approach, rich in detail, making the sometimes abstract connections between visual art and theater accessible to scholarly and general audiences alike. Through a thorough examination of various works and their contexts, he illuminates the transformation of dramatic literature within the broader cultural milieu of the period. George M. Baker, a respected scholar with a robust background in theater studies and art history, draws upon his extensive knowledge of cultural movements to illuminate the often-overlooked intersections between different artistic disciplines. His academic pursuits and personal passions converge in this work, reflecting his deep appreciation for the dynamic relationship between visual arts and theatrical performance. Baker'Äôs previous work has established him as a leading voice in the field, offering unique insights that inspire further dialogue among practitioners and theorists. I wholeheartedly recommend "The Exhibition Drama" to anyone interested in the evolution of theater, cultural studies, or the arts in general. Baker'Äôs scholarship not only enriches our understanding of drama as a complex art form but also invites readers to reconsider the role of visual exhibitions as vital contributors to theatrical innovation. This book is an essential read for scholars, artists, and avid theatergoers alike, promising a fresh perspective on familiar narratives.

”...a trans-mystical work of love and change...”—Ali Blythe, author of Hymnswitch

The mystics who coined the phrase ‘the way of affirmation’ understood the apocalyptic nature of the word yes, the way it can lead out of one life and into another. Moving among the languages of Christian conversion, Classical metamorphosis, seasonal transformation, and gender transition, Luke Hathaway tells the story of the love that rewired his being, asking each of us to experience the transfiguration that can follow upon saying yes—with all one’s heart, with all one’s soul, with all one’s mind, with all one’s strength ... and with all one’s body, too.

    Knock-knock! Who’s there?
Ultimately for all, it will be age. At first, it seems like a bad joke—needing a cane, memory loss, more care, forgetting even one’s own name. In Knock-knock, Lewis creates the persona of an older physician who should’ve known what’s in store. Sometimes the reality is grim, but there’s humor, love, and even romance in his inventive and poetic story-telling. “Lost-and-found / is not a planned / destination.” Yet we all eventually find ourselves there.
