Sinopse

In "New Grub Street," George Gissing intricately weaves a narrative that captures the tumultuous world of late Victorian literature, examining the struggles and moral quandaries faced by writers in a rapidly changing society. Through the lives of characters such as Edwin Reardon and Jasper Milvain, Gissing critiques the commodification of art, exploring themes of commercialism, artistic integrity, and the tension between creativity and financial survival. Stylistically, the novel melds naturalism with poignant character studies, emphasizing psychological depth and social commentary reflective of Gissing's own milieu, steeped in the realities of literary life in London. George Gissing, a figure often overshadowed in the annals of English literature, drew upon his own experiences in the literary trenches to inform this work. Born into a lower-middle-class family, Gissing struggled with poverty and the harsh realities of the publishing world during his early career. His intimate knowledge of both personal aspirations as a writer and the critical reception of contemporaries infused "New Grub Street" with authenticity, serving as both a critique of and a mirror to the struggles inherent to authorship. This novel is highly recommended for those interested in the interplay between art and commerce, as well as readers seeking an insightful exploration of the psychological and societal factors shaping literary ambition. Gissing's mastery of character and astute observations make "New Grub Street" an essential read, unearthing the sacrifices writers make in their quest for recognition.

Part 7: While visiting Moscow for Kitty's confinement, Kostya quickly gets used to the city's fast-paced, expensive and frivolous society life. He accompanies Stiva to a gentleman's club, where the two meet Vronsky. Kostya and Stiva pay a visit to Anna, who is occupying her empty days by being a patroness to an orphaned English girl. Kostya is initially uneasy about the visit, but Anna easily puts him under her spell. When he admits to Kitty that he has visited Anna, she accuses him of falling in love with her. The couple are later reconciled, realizing that Moscow society life has had a negative, corrupting effect on Kostya.
Anna Karenina is a novel by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy, first published in book form in 1878. Walter Lionel George was born to British parents on the 20th March 1882 in Paris, France.

It was not until he was a young man of 20 that he learned English. In 1905 he moved to London to work in an office but soon found himself working as a journalist, and as a foreign correspondent, for various London newspapers.

By 1911, with the publication of his first novel ‘A Bed of Roses’, which portrayed the fall of a penniless young woman into prostitution, his efforts were rewarded, and he turned to literature as a full-time career.

His writings now sold well. He added short stories to his offerings as well as literary essays and several tracts that discussed left-wing themes. Some critics thought his subject matter to be difficult and poorly chosen. His political views gained him little credit amongst his peers although such luminaries as George Orwell praised both subject matter and style.

His personal life was also turbulent. His three marriages left him widowed twice. In 1908 he married Helen Porter who died in 1914. Helen Agnes Moorhead followed in 1916 but died only 4 years later. His last marriage was to Kathleen Geipel in 1921.

    W. L George died on 30th January 1926. He was 43.

"The Spectacles" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in March 1844 in the Philadelphia Dollar Newspaper. It is one of Poe's comedy tales.
The narrator, 22-year-old Napoleon Buonaparte Froissart, changes his last name to "Simpson" as a requirement to inherit a large sum from a distant cousin, Adolphus Simpson. At the opera he sees a beautiful woman in the audience and falls in love instantly. He describes her beauty at length, despite not being able to see her well; he requires spectacles but, in his vanity, "resolutely refused to employ them". His companion Talbot identifies the woman as Madame Eugenie Lalande, a wealthy widow, and promises to introduce the two. He courts her and proposes marriage; she makes him promise that, on their wedding night, he will wear his spectacles.

Six has always been a number we group things around – Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.
