Brian Boru, one of medieval Ireland’s most celebrated figures, was an Irish king who played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s history. He is best known for ending the centuries-long dominance of the Uí Néill over the High Kingship of Ireland and resisting the Viking invasions that had threatened Irish sovereignty. Brian’s rise to power built upon the efforts of his father, Cennétig mac Lorcain, and his older brother, Mathgamain mac Cennétig, solidifying his place as one of Ireland’s most effective and unifying leaders.
Brian’s initial ascent began as the King of Munster. From there, he expanded his influence, conquering Leinster and ultimately claiming the title of High King of Ireland. His legacy includes founding the O’Brien dynasty, which played a significant role in Irish history long after his death. During his time, Ireland’s population was fewer than 500,000, yet it was fragmented into more than 150 small kingdoms. Brian’s ability to unify such a fractured land set him apart as a leader.

Jeffrey Joseph Juliana, nee Geoffrey Giuliano, nee Jaganntha Dasa, is a man of many faces and adventures. A plumber's son from Western, New York now in his mid-sixties, this transient soul has experienced a wide swath of poverty, riches, fame, anonymity, hedonism, and piety. At the same time 50% monk and 50% monkey, Giuliano is best known as the author of a shelfful of books on the Beatles and other rock icons, a well-known film actor, world traveler, vegetarian activist, and very public devotee of Sri Krishna.

Here is his rags to riches then back to rags story as told by himself, in an honest, enlightening, often shocking, sometimes humorous look back on the first nineteen years of his often unlikely life and times. This first installment of his autobiography focuses on the years 1953 to 1971 and his trek from a small-town kid, to an American 1960s hippie, to enthusiastic young seeker of Lord Krishna in the early years of the Hare Krishna Movement.

While this is uniquely Geoffrey's story it is also a similar tale to many who lived through the same era. If the child is the father of the man then this collection of cutting memories explains a great deal about the bold, creative character Giuliano later became

This is the audiobook of Part 1 of my memoir, My Amazing 35 Year Journey Abroad. I open the book at a time in my life when I was living in an unheated garage in the dead of winter in Chicago and that came about because of my alcoholism. The year was 1981 and I was 28 years old. By this time in my life I had been kicked out of college, fired from 2 jobs including being fired by my father for crashing my company car drunk, divorced once with another one on the way, and I was broke and jobless. I would then pick myself up and brush myself off and get hired as a stockbroker by Dean Witter Reynolds. I would then blow that great opportunity by, you guessed it, abusing alcohol, and after working for 3 different brokerage houses, I would then quit drinking, start my modeling career, take an inadvertent 1 week ski trip to Austria, and then decide not to get on that return flight to Chicago, but instead would take a train from innsbruck to Nice, France where I would work as a model and actor, and then after a few months in Nice, I would move to Paris where I would live for 6 or so months, and then because of a suggestion from a photographer during a job there, I would end up flying to Singapore where I would work as a model and actor there, then after about 6 months there, I would end up moving to NYC to study acting and work as an actor there, and during my day job, I worked as a skate guard at Rockefeller Center where I would work with LIberace during his show there celebrating the skating rinks 50th birthday and there are photos in the book to prove it. Then from NYC I would move to Hong Kong where I would work as a featured actor in 4 movies, including a role in Kickboxer. I would then move to Bangkok, Thailand where I would start my nudie photography career and become the most prolifice photographer of naked Asian girls in the world. It is now 2024 and I am still in Thailand, retired here at the age of 70.

The Russian novel has a reputation that is immense, both in narrative and in length. Unquestionably though the ideas, themes and characters make many novels rightly revered as world class, as icons of literature.

Perhaps an easier way to enjoy a wider selection of the Russian heritage, with its varied and glorious literary talents, is with the short story. These gems sparkle and beguile the mind with their characters and narrative, exploring facets of society and the human condition that more Western authors somehow find more difficult to navigate, or to explore, explain and relate to.

The Russian short story is, in many respects, in a genre of its own. It is at its captivating best whether it’s an exploration of real-life experiences, through fantasy and fables and on to total absurdity.

In a land so vast it is unsurprising that it is a world almost unto itself. Cultures and landscapes of differing hues are packed together bound only by the wilful bonds and force of Empire.

The stories in this collection traverse the decades where one might be a serf under an absolute monarch, and the reality of that was pretty near to slavery, into an emancipation of sorts in the fields, or towns under the despotic will of landowners and the rich into the upheavals of Empire and then the overthrow of the ruling class and its replacement by the communists, who promised equality for all and delivered a society where the down-trodden remained the lowest yet vital cog of the state machine and its will.

Whilst Tolstoy, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Pushkin and Chekhov are a given in any Russian collection we also explore and include Andreyev, Korolenko, Turgenev, Blavatsky and many others to create a world rich and dense across a sprawling landscape of diverse people, riddled with the class and unfairness in perhaps some of the most turbulent times that Russia has ever experienced.

Ayn Rand's philosophy, known as Objectivism, centers around a few key principles:

Metaphysics: Rand asserts the primacy of existence. She argues that reality exists independent of our perceptions or beliefs, and that it is knowable through reason.

Epistemology: She champions reason as the only means of acquiring knowledge. According to Rand, reason is the faculty that identifies and integrates the material provided by our senses.

Ethics: Rand's ethical theory is based on rational self-interest or egoism. She argues that individuals should act in their own best interest, and that this is both moral and practical. The virtue of selfishness, as she terms it, means pursuing one’s own happiness as the highest moral aim.

Politics: Rand advocates for laissez-faire capitalism as the ideal political system. She believes that the government’s sole role should be to protect individual rights through the police, military, and judiciary, but not to interfere in the economy or individual choices.

Aesthetics: In her view, art is a reflection of an artist's values and vision of life. She supports Romantic Realism, where art is a representation of life as it could be and should be, celebrating human potential and achievement.
