I wrote most of these poems while the memories of a woman from my past scraped at my mind. I've learned to accept that life is about overcoming desire and finding peace in not getting what you want, but I'm only human, which means sometimes I enjoy entertaining an erotic, morbid, desperate, and painfully hopeful side of me when the mood strikes. As Jews tried to escape Nazi Germany in the 1930s, they faced unthinkable roadblocks in obtaining exit visas. And while they were denied entry in one country after another, a bureaucratic oddity enabled some of them to flee to an unlikely destination: Shanghai, China.
