Sinossi

Things get murky when a ferry captain is found dead in the water in this mystery starring Inspector Littlejohn, “the model of a calm, rational policeman” (Publishers Weekly).   After a ferry to Falbright carrying forty people runs aground, the skipper is nowhere to be found. When the ferry pilot is discovered under a pier with a knife in his back, Inspector Littlejohn is called in. But he and Sergeant Cromwell are struggling to find clues. Some of the villagers seem to be going out of their way to mislead the police, and there are secrets dating back to the war that need to be unearthed or the entire investigation could be sunk . . .   “When you get a George Bellairs story you get something worth reading.” —Norfolk Ledger-Dispatch

A girl falls from the penthouse floor of an apartment in Washington, DC. Media Mogul Richard Wanton owns the apartment and is seen standing on the balcony when the girl falls. He is accused of killing her, but the FBI struggles to find enough solid evidence to convict him. They have a witness, someone who was in the apartment when it happened, but she doesn’t want to talk to them. She’ll only speak to one person, ex-FBI profiler Eva Rae Thomas. The problem is, Eva Rae Thomas has no interest in talking to her. As a matter of fact, she’d rather see this woman dead than have to face her. But Eva Rae Thomas isn’t someone who can leave a case alone, especially not when she starts to ask questions and things aren’t adding up. As she digs in deeper - with the entire world watching - she soon finds herself in too deep and realizes she can’t trust anyone’s motives. But by then, it is too late, and the killer is already tracking her down.

Arthur Llewelyn Jones was born in Caerleon, Monmouthshire on the 3rd March 1863.

Machen came from a long line of clergymen, and when he was two, his father became vicar of a small parish about five miles north of Caerleon, and Machen was brought up at the rectory there.

In his early years he received an excellent classical education, but family poverty ruled out university, and he was sent to London to sit exams to attend medical school but failed the exams. He did show literary promise with the publication of the poem ‘Eleusinia’ in 1821. But life in London was difficult and it was only in 1884 that he published again and was taken on to translate several French works which thereafter became the standard editions for many years.

In 1887, his father died. That same year he married Amelia Hogg, a maverick music teacher with a passion for the theatre. He also began to receive legacies from Scottish relatives which allowed him to devote more time to writing.

After publishing in literary magazines in 1894 he published his first book ‘The Great God Pan’. Its sexual and horrific content very much helped sales.

Over the next decade or so he wrote some of his best work but was unable to find a publisher mainly due to the collapse of the decadent market over Oscar Wilde’s scandalous trial.

In 1899, his wife died and during his long recovery he took up acting and travelled around the country as part of a travelling company. Three years later he was publishing again and had remarried.

Re-publishing of earlier works helped anchor both his reputation and his income. By the time the Great War opened Europe’s wounds he returned to the public eye with ‘The Bowmen’ helped by the publicity around the ‘Angel of Mons’ episode.

However, by the late 20’s new works had dried up and his back catalogue was no longer a source of regular income.

In 1932 he received a Civil List pension of ₤100 per annum but other work was not forthcoming. His finances finally stabilised with a literary appeal in 1943 for his eightieth birthday and allowed him to live his remaining years in relative comfort.

Arthur Machen died on 15th December 1947 in Beaconsfield. He was 84.

After years of turmoil, things are finally looking up for Columbus, Ohio, private eye Andy Hayes. As Sick to Death opens, Andy is relishing his new gig: a drama-free, family-friendly stint as a guard at the Columbus Museum of Art. What could be better than regular hours, a steady paycheck, and an attractive coworker who may be just as interested in him as he is in her? Right on schedule, Andy's newfound equilibrium comes crashing down when he interrupts the theft of a valuable painting—and is promptly fired for breaking protocols. Helping him thwart the robbers is a young woman whom Andy has caught staring at him several times. To his shock, she reveals she's an adult daughter he never knew he had. But Alex Rutledge, about to enter the Columbus Police Academy, isn't looking for family time. She wants to hire her newly discovered father to find the driver who killed her mother, Kate, five months earlier in a still unsolved hit-skip accident. Andy uncovers troubling details about Kate's death that point toward murder and an angry anti-vax sentiment roiling below the surface at the hospital where she worked. Complicating Andy's case, he finds himself in the crosshairs of an FBI investigation into the attempted art theft. With time running out and his and Alex's lives on the line, Andy rushes to defend his reputation as a private eye and find Kate's killer.
