Sinopsis

In "Hegel's Philosophy of Mind," Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel explores the intricate relationship between consciousness, self-awareness, and the development of the human spirit within a systematic framework. This work, part of Hegel's larger project in the Encyclopedia of the Philosophical Sciences, delves into the evolution of mind, elucidating its stages from sense-certainty to absolute knowledge. Hegel employs a dialectical method, revealing how contradictions within thought drive the progression of consciousness. His style exhibits a complex, often challenging prose that demands active engagement from the reader, framed against the backdrop of early 19th-century German idealism. Hegel, a crucial figure in Western philosophy, was deeply influenced by the historical and cultural upheavals of his time, including the aftermath of the French Revolution. His intellectual journey was marked by a quest to reconcile individual freedom with universal principles, which significantly shaped his philosophical outlook. The synthesis of these ideas is vividly manifested in "Philosophy of Mind," where he articulates a holistic understanding of the human experience. This book is highly recommended for those seeking insight into Hegel's view of consciousness and its integral role in human existence. It is an essential text for students of philosophy, psychology, and the humanities, offering profound implications for contemporary debates surrounding the nature of self and society.

On the rubbish dump, a baby cried.
The cry was weak, and fading. The wild dogs had picked up the cries, and the scent, and were circling, closing in.
Bessie walked towards the sound and found a day-old baby girl. She had been abandoned because of her sex. It happened often here, in south west China.
If Bessie did nothing, the baby would be torn to pieces. So she picked her up, carried her to safety, and later adopted her. Yet, in saving her life, did Bessie condemn the baby she named Pearl to a life of fear and persecution?
This is Pearl’s story, and that of Bessie, plus Alf – Bessie’s then fiancé, later husband – and John, a second Han Chinese child the couple adopted.
Bessie and Alf were Methodists missionaries in Yunnan province, China, in the first half of the twentieth century. They lived through momentous times, including the Japanese occupation, the Second World War, the civil war, the Communist takeover and the Cultural Revolution.
This book follows their personal stories against the backdrop of a turbulent century.

After the successful amphibious invasion on D-Day in June 1944, the Allies began racing east toward Germany and liberating France along the way. The Allies had landed along a 50 mile stretch of French coast, and despite suffering 8,000 casualties on D-Day, over 100,000 still began the march across the western portion of the continent. By the end of August 1944, the German Army in France was shattered, with 200,000 killed or wounded and a further 200,000 captured. However, Adolf Hitler reacted to the news of invasion with glee, figuring it would give the Germans a chance to destroy the Allied armies that had water to their backs. As he put it, “The news couldn’t be better. We have them where we can destroy them.” While that sounds delusional in retrospect, it was Hitler’s belief that by splitting the Allied march across Europe in their drive toward Germany, he could cause the collapse of the enemy armies and cut off their supply lines.
Near the end of 1944, as Allied forces were pushing across the Pacific and edging ever closer to Japan, plans were drawn up to invade the Ryuku islands, the most prominent of them being Okinawa. Military planners anticipated that an amphibious campaign would last a week, but instead of facing 60,000 Japanese defenders as estimated, there were closer to 120,000 on the island at the beginning of the campaign in April 1945. The Battle of Okinawa was the largest amphibious operation in the Pacific theater, and it would last nearly 3 months and wind up being the fiercest in the Pacific theater during the war, with nearly 60,000 American casualties and over 100,000 Japanese soldiers killed. In addition, the battle resulted in an estimated 40,000-150,000 Japanese civilian casualties.
