We track Robbie Carton's descent from his mind- numbing accounting job to...? Well, something else probably, but before that, he has to escape his life, the tarantula, Paris, an office full of absurdity, the outback, wheelie bins and of course, Bentley, Robbie's boss and natural enemy according to Robbie. Winifred Holtby was born on 23rd June 1898 to a prosperous farming family in the village of Rudston in Yorkshire.
A governess provided her early education before she went to Queen Margaret's School in Scarborough. After passing the entrance exam for Somerville College, Oxford in 1917, she decided to join the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in early 1918. However, soon after her arrival in France, the War ended.
She returned to study at Oxford and met fellow student Vera Brittain. After graduating from Oxford, in 1921, Winifred and Vera moved to London, hoping to establish themselves as authors.
Her early novels met with only moderate success but as a journalist she was both prolific and increasingly well-known. Her articles graced more than 20 newspapers and magazines, including the Manchester Guardian newspaper.
Winifred was a committed feminist, socialist and pacifist. She gave many lectures for the League of Nations Union. She was also active in the Independent Labour Party and was a campaigner for the unionisation of black workers in South Africa.
In 1931 the symptoms of high blood pressure, recurrent headaches and bouts of lassitude brought forth a diagnosis of Bright's disease. She was given two years to live and now put all her efforts into what was to become her crowning achievement: South Riding. Released posthumously it received lavish praise and enormous sales. Her canon of works tackle difficult subjects head on, many in unusual ways, brimming with verve and usually strong female protagonists.
Winifred Holtby died on 29th September 1935 in London. She was 37.

Humans are not exactly a peace loving species. We see danger everywhere. Evolution has equipped those of our ancestors who survived with a very strong sense of fear and the need to always protect ourselves. Those who lacked these sensibilities simply did not last as long or reproduce as well. Thus, everything is a threat to us humans until proven otherwise. And even after proven not to be an immediate threat we are still very suspicious and wary. Mack Reynolds takes this proclivity and gives us a story about the future that is both humorous and frightening because it is so sadly true. Everything, no matter how peaceful looking now, is a potential enemy and thus should be eliminated. No, must be eliminated. Otherwise who knows what will happen, eh?

A nifty pulp SF story written in 1940 and published in Planet Stories. What would happen if someone found the secret of immortality in 1423 and lived until the 20th century? Of course the catch is that someone must die for him to keep on living; it must be a woman, a woman who loves him and he must do the killing. Carlyle may be such a man. In this story, he roams the uncharted star-seas, seeking Death as he sought the richly-laden derelicts in that Saragossa of long-vanished space-galleons. Did I say seeking death? Yes I did. .

The uplifting story of fresh starts and second chances from the Sunday Times bestselling author Erica James
After a long and seemingly happy marriage, Louisa is stunned when her husband Kip suddenly asks for a divorce. He’d never seemed unhappy – and they’ve raised three children together.
For months, Kip has been secretly seeing a younger woman – and if that wasn’t bad enough, it’s the woman who broke their youngest son’s heart.
Now Kip is moving out and embarking on a new life with Zoe, and Louisa is left to pick up the pieces. Their beloved family home, Charity Cottage, is up for sale, and tensions are running high.
Yet, despite the betrayal and anger, when Louisa lays eyes on what might be a unique and welcoming new home, she feels a first glimmer of hope that life might be taking a turn for the better.
And while Louisa is making exciting plans, Kip finds himself facing challenges of his own and begins to learn that living the dream may not be as simple as he thought…
