Sinopsis

A Town of Ghosts is a collection of 19 original illustrated ghost stories set in the Buckinghamshire town of Stony Stratford in Milton Keynes. The stories are loosely inspired by the history, characters and landscape of the town; most have an element of dark humour, though several nod towards the cryptic, brooding tales of the great ghost story writer MR James. You will meet a host of bizarre and macabre characters such as the resentful decomposing corpse of Thomas Farrar residing at the bottom of ancient well in a coffee shop. Look out for Death rebranded and pushing a dust cart around the streets, gathering souls and finally meeting his match! As a compliment to the film Bladerunner there's even a futuristic tale of malicious robots plotting the downfall of their creators. The final story is a tongue-in-cheek attempt to present the author and illustrator as two decrepit characters seeking to complete an unfinished literary work! As a former archaeologist the author tries to weave an archaeological perspective into some of the stories, suggesting that change is not always progressive. Spooky but fun!

Have you ever passed a shop that wasn't there the day before? When Gip and his father step off the mundane pavement of Regent Street and into the "Genuine Magic Shop," they expect nothing more than card tricks and glass balls. But inside, the mirrors distort more than just reflections, and the shopman—a man with one ear larger than the other—produces more than just rabbits from a hat. Coloured fire drips from fingertips, lead soldiers march with a life of their own, and a terrifyingly "genuine" magic begins to pulse behind the counter. As the walls shift and the exit vanishes, a father’s amusement turns to cold, heart-gripping dread. Was it a dream, a trick, or did they stumble into a dimension where the laws of reality no longer apply? In a place where the shopkeeper knows your name and the toys possess a heartbeat, the only thing more dangerous than getting lost is finding exactly what you were looking for... Press play now and step into the shadows—before the shop disappears again!

This creepy story is considered by many to be the most grisly and terrifying of all of Poe's writings. It is told by an unnamed narrator who endeavors to convince the reader of the narrator's sanity while simultaneously describing a murder the narrator committed. The victim was an old man with a filmy pale blue "vulture-eye", as the narrator calls it. The narrator emphasizes the careful calculation of the murder, attempting the perfect crime, complete with dismembering the body in the bathtub and hiding it under the floorboards. Ultimately, the narrator's actions result in hearing a thumping sound, which the narrator interprets as the dead man's beating heart.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
Fall asleep to eleven terrifying alien encounters featuring physical contact and bright light experiences that left witnesses permanently affected and changed forever. These accounts capture the more frightening aspects of the phenomenon, though presented with a calming narrative pace suitable for relaxation and sleep. Experience the witness who learned the hard way why not to fight an extraterrestrial, and those who decades later still admitted they were really afraid when recounting their stories. Discover the men in the sky who seemed to observe humanity from above with unknown intent, and the piercing screams that haunted those who heard them long afterward. These stories include beings who seemed strangely like old friends despite their obvious otherworldly nature, aliens with mustaches that defied typical descriptions of extraterrestrials, and men in transparent spheres that hovered impossibly against all known physics. From quarry aliens emerging from industrial sites to beings appearing suddenly in yards without any warning, each account involves closer contact than most witnesses would ever choose. The existential experience of one witness who felt they did not exist during their encounter, and the reptilian being that represented humanity's deeper fears, complete this collection of intense encounters presented with measured pacing.

"I binge-read this book, savoring the gothic creepiness at the heart of each tale. Packed with compelling, nuanced lives and the deaths that haunt them, each story is a séance—an invitation for unsettled spirits to let their presence be known, 'desperate for someone to supply the narrative.' Murray supplies it with great style and an uncanny knowingness, leaving room for our imagination to fill in the suggestive spaces with our own dark dread." —MONA AWAD, author of All's Well

Sabina Murray has long been celebrated for her mastery of the gothic. Now in Muckross Abbey and Other Stories, she returns to the genre, bringing listeners to haunted sites from a West Australian convent school to the moors of England to the shores of Cape Cod in ten strange tales that are layered, meta, and unforgettable.

From a twisted recasting of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, to an actor who dies for his art only to haunt his mother's house, to the titular "Muckross Abbey," an Irish chieftain burial site cursed by the specter of a flesh-eating groom—in this collection Murray gives us painters, writers, historians, and nuns all confronting the otherworldly in fantastically creepy ways. With notes of Wharton and James, Stoker and Shelley, now drawn into the present, these macabre stories are sure to captivate and chill.
